Corner of 37th and Westfield Today

This is the corner of 37th and Westfield… the building on the left is the former site of Eric’s Barber Shop, on the right is the building that was once Barron’s Rug Mart, after it moved from the corner of 36th and Westfield which  then became Jimmy Burgoes Pizza.

I remember Eric’s barber shop when it was Sam’s, owned by a friend of my parents, his name was Sam DiDomenico. I did not like the way he cut my hair so I only went there once. I use to go to Henry’s down by 34th St most of the time.

On the south west corner of 37th and Westfield Av., on the corner, there used to be a dry good store (late 40’s) and moving south next was Heller’s Drug Store. I remember swiping a penny piece of gum and when we left the store and my Grandmother saw what I had done, she sent me back to pay for it and also leave the gum. I was 4 or 5 years old. I was so humiliated, I never entertained thoughts of ever stealing, again!

On south, the next store was a radio repair shop which had “millions” of tubes thrown into the front window display area. Next was Checkers Produce store with fresh produce. Next was Koerner’s Bakery. They had an ice-cream bar at the back of the store and booths along one side wall. The front window had a refrigerated display case with the most tempting goodies which would entice you in.

From there , south, there were homes until you reached 36th St
