I remember Neil – “Corny” – from Davis and the neighborhood, and also from the Davis playground. He was a really nice kid, a year ahead of me. I knew his siter Annette from several elementary school classes, she too was a really sweet and nice kid. I remember with sadness hearing the news about Neil dying while visiting his grandparents in Mississippi, it was only about a week after school let out for the Summer. I remember coming in one day from outside and my Mom telling me the sad news. I think for many of us, Neil’s passing was the first time we had experienced the death of a classmate. He was a great kid who passed away at much too young an age.

    Hi.
My name is Linda Clark (formerly Linda Britton)
I attended Davis around 1967, and I was just surfing, when I found this site! I couldn’t believe it when I saw this Name listed as a memorial, and I was hoping that someone could provide me some information, as I moved from East Camden late 1968! Over the years I lost touch with the Taylor family, and wanted to know if this is the family that I once
knew! If I remember correctly, They resided in East Camden on Westfield Ave. I lived at Rolles Court on E.34th Street. Ruby Taylor had children by the names of Neil, Sheila, Annette ( Nettie) and the youngest child was a boy they called Chucky. This is a family that my own mother, me, and my brother Joe were very close to before we moved to N.J. If anyone can tell me that this is the same family, plase leave your information here, I would really appreciate knowing more, and perhaps getting in touch with them! Unfortunatly we lost touch over the years!
I attended Davis in 1967, some of the classmates that I remember are….
Judith Noble, Thomas Myers, John Waters, and Joseph Martino, all from E 34th streetwhich was only a few blocks from Westfield acres. Thank you!

Hi Linda, Welcome to the site. Yes, this tribute page is to the Neil Taylor you remember from your childhood living on 34th Street. Neil, or “Corny” as he was sometimes called by friends, was the brother of Sheila, Annette and Chucky, and his Mom’s name was Ruby. If you left Davis and East Camden in 1968, that was two years before Neil’s passing. He died shortly after school got out for the Summer while on vacation at his grandparent’s home in Mississippi. He was between 7th and 8th Grade, when he died.

If you lived on 34th, it would have been N. 34th, which ran from Cramer Hill, through East Camden, to Federal Street where it became S. 34th. Be sure to check out the other pages on this site, as there are a number of people who have posted here who are from the 34th Street area. I’m sure there are probably people here who will remember you.

    Ken,
Thank you so much for your response to my inquiry!
Yes you are right, it was north 34th not east! it was so long ago that
I lived in Camden, and memory certainly does get a bit cloudy with age!
I lived in the Camden area twice during my growing up years. The first time I lived there I was in fifth grade at Parkside school. That was in 1963
as I will never forget the day that President Kennedy died! I remember my teacher in tears as she sent my class home for the day! I then moved back to N.J. after a couple years passed, we again came back to Camden where I was enrolled at HH Davis. I met Sheila Taylor who was standing on the sidelines encouraging me in my first schoolyard fight! I don’t remember the girls first name, but she was a school bully! her last name , as I recall was Mason…..funny how somethings just stick in our mind!
Anyway, Sheila, and I became best friends from that day on, and my Mother and brother and I became very close to that family until another move seperated us! I also remember that there was a family illness with both Shelia, and Neil having Diabetes, and taking insulin. I just read the obit, and after all this time, I am also very saddened to read of Neils death just by chance that I visited this site! I was just trying to look up an old candy factories name that I recall hanging around on Westfield Ave. Needless to say, I found much more than just what I was looking for!
My Mother who was Neils Mothers best friend has now passed on. I don’t know if Ruby is still on this earth, but I would like to make
contact on my mothers behalf, she lost Rubys address, and phone # when we moved! If anyone has any info on them I would like to know!
I will be visiting here! Thanks again Ken! take care!
