Does this mean comments will no longer be shuffled to the various headings and no more comments will appear on any of the sites? If so, we who have kept up with the chatter will have read everything and the site becomes closed for us. Am I understanding this correctly?
Peg, I have set up this one page here at the site for the posting of comments. You will no longer be able to post on individual pages. This centralizes all posts to one page. It was becoming too much to keep tracking down posts and adding recent posts to the update page. Besides, many were posting and carrying on discussions on pages that were originally set up for other purposes, such as to only leave email addresses.
Also, my computer crashed yesterday because it most likely became infected from the admin section of this site, due to the large amounts of spam that someone has been attempting to post on this site. All of the spam was caught and did not get posted, however, my computer, because I administer this site, was vulnerable. My wife spent an entire afternoon, reformating my computer, wiping clean the hard drive, and reinstalling programs. I cannot risk that happening again.
As I’ve said before, WordPress sites were never intended for this purpose. This site grew beyond the capabilities of what a blog site on WordPress can accomodate. This is why I have been encouraging people to check out FaceBook. I set up a new site there, many from here are FaceBook members, and many others from East Camden, who have never visited this site, are also there.
And the discussions on this site have slowed to a small trickle in recent months, and most comments were being posted on only a few pages anyway, now they can all be found in one place.
Thanks for the speedy clarification. I do understand it was becoming a monumental task for you and your wife. Let’s face it, life is too short to be bound to the computer day and night. You have a family and deserve to spend time with them. Speaking for all who have enjoyed this site, we thank you.
Thanks Jeanette and Peg. The site will continue, it’s just more efficient this way with one page to post on, rather than 254 (yes, we have that many separate pages here). And I will continue to post photos and links that are relevant to the site as they are forwarded to me.
As I’ve said before, this site has been a wonderful connection to the memories of the East Camden I remember, & reconnect with some people I haven’t seen for 40-50+ years in some cases.
I met phillys Jennings in Cherry Hill Hospital I was six years old and we got our appendix out together. We found out that I lived on 32nd street and lived be hind me in the acres. I would sleep over her house and her mom would go bowling and leave us by ourselves. I think she felt better leaving phillyis then. any way she was going with Dukie Freehoff and got hooked on drugs It was a drug deal gone bad and she got her head bashed in in north came with a brick. I was very sad to hear what happen to her but I did not hang around with her when she was on drugs…
Tom lowe that is what I know about phyllis. i am happy to report after 4 months everyone is out of the hospital for now and doing better. Mom and dad will be on oxygen the rest of their lives and michele will start chemo in sept. after she recovers from gaulbadder removeial and 1/3 lung removed.
The site now is easy for us also Ken got to be a challenge keeping up with several postings through out the site and much easier for you to manage and that delights me because not many really know how much energy and effort you put to bringing the site together. You know it has been a blessing to me. I hope when you do get time drop in the last set of photo’s I sent you as I believe they will be of great pleasure to many. I understand the ” facebook ” thing and growth and all, this site here works best for me, so I will be hanging out here blogging away with those that stop by and directing a person or 2 over to a photo gallery that they may or may not have had the chance to view. Ken you can be proud of the work you have done and God will bless all that you do as you bring joy and lift spirits to those that cross your path.
Harry L. I will look forward to our discussions during the World Series regardless of the teams (although a repeat may seem to be a no brainer).
Harry L. By the way did you see that Triple Play Oh My Gosh Utley is the man. Every now and then you got to say… I can’t believe my eyes…. Believe it baby, Phil’s turning things around.
Yes, this is better, all posts are right here, no need to go searching for them, and there will be no more missing posts or arrivals of new visitors, as often happened under the old system.
Ella-Marie, I’m glad to hear your Mom and Dad are both home from the hospital, and also that Michele is moving forward in her recovery. Tell them all I was asking about them, and continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers. My dad and your dad were the only two guys on the 32nd Street Hill who went by the nickname “Bud” – LOL Funny the things we remember!
Ken Barr, unfortunately when my computer crashed over the weekend, I lost all photos I had stored in files on my C-Drive. So any photos I had not already uploaded to the site were lost. I lost over a thousand recent photos from our travels this Summer, but luckily two of my kids had uploaded those same photos to their computers, so I was able to re-upload them and also burn them to a CD.
And think of this as one stop shopping for your comments and posts, no need to travel around the various pages looking for all the recent ones. But you can still leisurely view the other pages, the pictures, and past comments.
Ken Barr, that was 1 wild game against the Mets. inside the park hr, errors at the worst time for the Phils, and an unassisted triple play by Bruntlett which more than made up for his 9th inning error. Ken Brown, 1 stop posting, probably the most efficient way to go……way to go Ken.
South Jersey’s QB Joe Flacco tonight, preseason Ravens versus Jets, 8pm, ESPS, with Buddy Ryan’s (remember him) son coaching the Jets.
Hey Ray Hale, or anyone else who might know, does anyone have any contact info for Johnny Vincent? I got a notice that he left a message on Classmates for me, but I am not a paying member of that site, so cannot get to the message. If anyone is in touch with John, let him know about this site!
Ken,
I must also add my appreciation for all your efforts to operate this site. I have enjoyed it and look forward to the future of this site. Thank you very much.
PS; I will send you a soft pretzel for your birthday.
Ella-Marie,
Phyllis Jennings lived 2 doors away from me on Merriel Ave. I knew her father and younger sister Marie, who married Tommy Edwards from 32nd St. I am still friends with Tommy and Marie. It was a sad ending for Phyllis and later for Duke.
I have enjoyed re-connecting with former neighbors and hope to continue to hear more stories from 34th St. and Pelham Place neighbors. Thanks for the opportunity to do this.
Do you know if Duke’s real name was Charles Freehoff – just wondering; if so he was in my class in early elementary years, & would’ve been a ‘70 graduate from whichever high school he would’ve gone to.
St. Joe’s Pro Cathedral..Wow..What a great site here! Class of 70. 4 of 9 brother and sisters. 32nd and Westfield.
Basketball player and alter boy. I was never hit on once by the priests! Was I that ugly? Do the nuns have access to this site?
Hello to Freddy Vesper, Jim Lang, and all of my east camden neighbors.
It is nice to know that we reconnect after all of these years.
Lenny Formanek, welcome to the site. You must have lived in the 100 block of 32nd, I grew up on the 200 Block, top of the Hill – #222, up from the Esso Gas, and later Cumberland Farms. And yes, the nuns from St. Joe’s can access this site…LOL
Lenny,
How are you? It has been some time since we last seen each other. Your sister (Barbara I think) works with my brother Donnie at Camden County.
Dave,
I think Duke,s real name was Charles but I canot remember for sure, he was a few years younger than me. He had a older sister my age and her name was Franny.
Freddy,
I thought you retired to your villa in Italy? Do you still have your boat?
Eileen works with Donnie at Camden County. Barb is in Merchantville working at Burlington Hospital.
Ken,
I delivered the currier post on the 200 block area. You might remember a mini-bike or go-cart paperboy. That was me. I lived on the same block as Mario’s steak house near Booths Deli acrossed from Syes cleaners. The reason I ask if the sisters check this site out is because spelling wasnt my strong suit. I havent diagramed a sentence since those days. I have the knuckles to prove it.
It’s great reading about old times and hearing alot about
people I grew up with. I grew up on 38th. & High St. went
to Davis & W.W.H.S. Class of 75. Hope to hear from or see
some old friends soon.
Joe Dabkowski, welcome to the site; glad you are enjoying it. I seem to recall your name from the High Street area, I hung around 39th a lot with Paul Skeens, and 37th with Billy Coates back in middle school.
Hello all, I don’t know if anyone knows or remembers me. I lived in Abblett Village through the sith grade. Moved to an old house on Dudley St right next to ther tracks across from West Field Acres. (Mike and Kathy Clifford liveb a few houses down on the end of the block). Then went to Davis Jr in ‘62, and graduated from wwhs in 1968. Played baseball at Davis and Wilson. Also played football at Wilson untill an injury ended my carrer there. I also was named class actor and class clown. Starred in the Music Man at Wilson. It was the first musical they did. Miss Anita Jackson was the dramatic coach. She came from Davis. I had her for English at Davis. Was going to her class when JFK was shot. She handled the situation gracefully and kept us sane. While at wwhs moved to Morse St right behind the Pizza King. Ate more Panzerottis than I’d care to admit. Still got a “Pizza Belly”. I love seeing the names and places mentioned on this sight. Visited a couple of years ago. Recently received an email from my co-star in the Music Man. She said she saw a posting of mine on the site. Hey Carol S. If you still come on here,..I graduated with your sister Jane. Loved her. Great girl. I hope she is well. I went to that restaurant on the 130 circle after the Junior Prom(My date was a beautiful young lady who was one of three orientals in town, her name was Laverne Eng) I’m sorry but for the life of me I can’t remember it’s name. I saw that someone mentioned that Billy Gray was in Canada. What a maniac. We played baseball together att WWHS. Unfortunately I didn’t play my senior year, Jerry Gold tried to get me to play every day at school. But I had to make a decision on whether to play ball or do the Music Man. I chose the latter. They became a great team after that. I ended up playing ball in college in California after time in the Marines and 7 years of playing Rock and Roll in the south jersey club set. PLayed in a band named Cagney. We were pretty good. Played ALJO’s once a month the Jersey shore. Tony Marts, The Old Tavern, the Penalty Box etc. Than formed a band of Camden kids named Falzteeth with Rusty Scully, Chuckie Lawrence , Joey Greene and George Davison. Used to play at the immortal and legendary Step Inn in Cramer Hill. When we split I played guitar and sang solo in a bar in Atlantic City called the 4 Aces Pub on Pacific and Georgia Aves. Moved to California, Michigan, North Carolina and for the last 15 years live in the outskirts of Phoenix AZ, (sorry Eagles fans,..go Cards). I’ve worked in the retail and casino industry and next month I start a new career doing stand up comedy. I did it for about a year in the late 80’s and have got the bug again. I’ll be 60 in a few months so what the hell,..hey. I get flooded with memories from almost every posting. I had almost forgotten the names but you guys have refreshed my 60’s affected memory with names like Gary Lore and Lenny Sample(they were teamates of mine) played baseball with Gary on the Marauders where I also played with the Legendary Freddy Vesper at shortstop and Dennis Cassady and Harry “the horse” Watson. I was saddened by the news of some of the deaths that have occurred. But time rolls on. Hope to hear from you all.
Hey Ken,
I remember you. From time to time I also hung around with
Paul and Bill. I mainly hung with Nick Mancini, Gary Herman,
Ron Schubert, Mike Medoro, Joe Cardirelli, Warren Everett
Pat Brandimarto. Use to hang at Davis and played street
hockey, stick ball, and touch football. It’s great hearing
from you and I’ll talk to you soon.
Hey Dennis Wilson! I remember a lot about you! I remember your black and white little dog Tippi. You had chocolate dog treats and you ate one to freak us out. You called and talked to my mom when you were at boot camp. Last time I saw you was in Cramer Hill after your MC days. You had on your dress blues jacket but had adopted more of a hippie look. Good luck with your stand up career!
Hey Casey…You live in CA now? Where? I lived in Marina Del Rey area for 7 years. How are your brothers doing? Drop me an email. at shutrtbuglin@cox.net.
Went to Davis for 6th grade 1956,Vets 57-59,WWHS 59-63,,retired CMSgt USAF living in Abilene Texas, visiting Pennsauken and Jersey shore each year since 2007,would like to hear from anyone interested.Great site!
Hey Mr. Clark glad you found the site, lot’s of memories for all of us. Did you have any other family members that went to Wilson, I recall playing football for a few years with a Clark any relations to you ?
Hey Ken,
I have been a “hermit” in my house in Lula, Ga (with no internet) and just found out about your new site design. Sure hope this new design gives you more time for yourself and your family! All I can say is “A BIG THANK YOU” for all your hard work! If daughter Debra had not discovered your site, I would have missed out on a lot of FUN! It is not every day that a 70 year old woman gets to reminisce and almost create an autobiography….. Your site has made me realize how much I was a part of East Camden….. Ken, you have made me feel like I won the Miss East Camden Contest! THANK YOU!
Thank you Ken!
This site is like a near death experiance or daja voo, I’ve been there before. My life flashed in front of me….
Inez: I drive through that town of Lula from time to time. Ila is more toward Athens bulldogs side of town. I love the Peach state!
I’m a dam yankee too! Never know when to go home…
Lenny, it certainly is like deja vu here… so many memories have been shared, stuff most all of us can relate to on some level.
Dennis Wilson, welcome to the site I enjoyed your post about your life since the Camden days.
Joe Dabkowski, I remember most of the names you mentioned. Nick Mancini lived up the other end of 32nd from me, on Merrill I believe, he was in our Explorer post for a while, knew Warren Everett since Ist Grade – I believe he is with the Camden Fire Department, and Gary Herman was on the Wilson wrestling team with a bunch of us.
Inez, it is nice to see you back visiting the site. Glad you are well, and things are going good in Lula. We miss you on FaceBook also. And it may not be too late for you to enter the “Mrs” East Camden Contest Speaking of Camden pageants, don’t know if I ever mentioned that I am married to Miss Rays of Sunshine from the 4th of July and other East Camden parades in the 60’s!
Hey Ken,
I am at Cara’s today. Debra and her husband Bill will be arriving from California any minute. While helping Cara straighten up I found an old snapshot which Cara says is Greg Hale, Joe Rozier, Len Antonelli, and another guy Cara cannot remember the name of. I will have it made into a 4×6 and email to you. It may be a few days from now. In this photo the guys are all about 16 years old and are dresed in suits with ties or bow ties.
It’s a really small world,I hope someone remembers Joanne Eichfield,I would hang around her place in the Acres listening to Barry US Bonds on the Geeter with the Heaters program, ole Jerry Blavit!
Yes,and Myspace plus any other locator sites like classmates, etc.I have found some close friends from Cramer Hill,The MacPhersons,Dolores Campbell-Arensberg,Bob and Sonja Dowhy,Rusty Logeren,Maria Clark,George and Cathy Hunt, and Betty Fischer-Mote.
I just sent you and Peg Marks DeBoard a photo of my husband and I at a convention we attended with Cara (Certified Kitchen Designers) where Bill O’ Rielly was keynote speaker (about 2 years ago). Now you have a better idea of what I really look like now…. a bit plump! Since Debra is in town for a while, she is going to take a new photo of me for Facebook…. I’m going to come clean and reveal the real me…. aren’t I brave?
I sent Peg a photo of Cara, Debra, and I cutting up….. we all had mustashes…. The grandkids had gotten them in a machine at the bowling ally and so we three “girls” had some fun with them. I would really be “an old fogy” if I didn’t have Cara and Debra to keep me mentally young.
Shhhhh, don’t tell Cara I told you; but I had a higher bowling score than hers. Ha Ha
Hey Peg Marks DeBoard,
You and George should really think about joining Ken’s East Camden Kids Facebook. It will give you more opportunity to track down or be tracked down by old friends.
Hey Ken Barr,
I sure hope you can re-send those photos to Ken. I hope you will also try Facebook. I am glad that you will keep posting here. I plan to keep checking here myself….. when I’m near a computer.
Hey Dave Baker,
Where are you? What’s happening, buddy?
I know that I am a little late to the party, but I just stumbled across your website when a friend Googled my name and it brought him here. He told me my name was on it so I had to check it out for myself. What a pleasant surprise to find a Davis/WWHS web site from my era. I lived at 30th & Royden street in East Camden about three blocks from McGraw Elementary. I graduated from Davis in ‘72 and WWHS in ‘76 . I also went onto Rutgers-Camden and graduated there in ‘80. I still live in the area with my wife in Maple Shade, NJ. Boy did this site bring back a flood of memories !! I was a yum yum seller back in the day, was also an usher at the Walt Whitman movies in 75-76 and played street hockey up at the Davis parking lot every Sunday morning in the fall and winter. I was a regular at IVY Lanes and later at Maple Bowl as well through the 70’s and 80’s. I still keep in contact with some of the ‘76 gang like Paul Burns, Pat Smaritto, and Dave Huntsinger. Great job on the web site Ken, keep up the good work. I will see if I can kind some old pictures and send them to you.
Hi Dyane, I remember you and your family ! Your Dad always had the neatest Mustang car !! I have not been back to that area for many years. I have a friend who is on the Camden Police force that patrols that area now, and he said that the area has not held up well at all.
Hey Pete, Great to see you here at the site. There are quite a few from our great Class of ‘76 who have passed through here, and who continue to visit. Harry Loeffler is around here someplace, he is about due for a drive by; Hope, Pat Smarrito, Paul Skeens, Ken Barr, Nick Rapanotti, and others stop by too now and then, and you can find most everyone on FaceBook. There are hundreds of Wilson people there.
Good to hear you are doing well. Spread the word about the site. Lorrie and I moved back to Jersey in ‘97, we live down the Shore near Smithville. We have three teen daughters, two in high school, one in middle school.
Oh boy I have to watch you EVERY minute don’t I? Miss Rays of Sunshine…LOL and somewhere around in our old junk I have a picture of someone named Miss Dusty Trail too.
Does anyone remember “Aunt Mary” Caratenuto? I’m not sure if I’m spelling that name correctly. She was a lady who lived in McGuire Gardens off Randolf street in Camden where I lived from about 1963 to 1973. She liked to get the neighborhood kids involved in parades and charitable activities, she and I paraded around Cooper Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes many holidays bringing cheer to many patients. My Mom would sew my costumes and sometimes Aunt Mary’s as well. When she got older she moved to apartments near Westfield Acres and I saw her there a couple of times. The last time I saw her was when she came to our wedding in July 1978. I remember going into Camden for the St. Patrick’s Day and Easter parades and sitting on the back of a convertable waving at all the crowd…..well I was Miss Rays of Sunshine !! LOL!
Theodore (Butchie Grimes) used to live on 35th& federal went to Davis school in the 70’s also believe Peggy Marks was my baby sitter if she is the one I remember my Mother was Sissy. Anyhow was just lookin to see how old classmates were doing.
Ella Marie used to hang out with my Aunt rose Cundiff and I think she was friends with Phyliss also I know my aunt did date Dukee, what happened to him?
I’m intrigued about the baby sitting! I lived at 34th & Fairfax Drive and remember baby sitting the Ward children who lived on 35th St. just west of Rowe St. Give me a little more info to jog my memory.
Peggy used to live in the middle of the block between railroad trcks and federal st. big grey house next door to the razzys I think I spelled it right. You may not be the same person as a matter of fact I am sorry I just remembered not Peggy but Betty Marks. Sorry!
Butchie, Welcome to the site! I knew your aunt Rose Cundiff. A number of us who post here were classmates of her’s in middle school. How is she doing? If she is online, be sure to tell her about the site.
And in the Marks family you are thinking of, was there a girl names Linda? I believed she lived near 35th and Federal.
Well Ken aunt Rose married Chris Glemser for awhile and now she lives in pine hill,nj she is on my space under either the last name of Cundiff or Glemser,at this time she is by herself with 1 daughter. Yes I believe you are right about Linda marks. Look for Rose on myspace you will find her there.
Hey Butchie were you near the Silvia family at all? I know you are a little closer to the tracks as you said, on the other side of federal was the Bates family any of them you know or in sontact with?
Butchie, thanks for the info about your aunt Rose Cundiff, I did connect with her on MySpace and sent her a link to this site. It’s nice hearing from her after so many years.
Lenny Formanek do you have a sister named Colette if so I graduated St. Joseph Pro-Cathedal with her in 1966. Tell her Jeanette said hello. I lived 2 doors from Ken at 226 North 32nd St.
Dennis Wilson would you remember Jean and Janice Haines who gratuated woodrow wilson in 68 from 32nd street and also there were another set of twins Dot and Carol Ormstrom from 32nd street.
Hey Dennis Wilson,
Do you have an older brother “Bobby Wilson”? A Bobby Wilson was a friend of my brother, Don Reams, in the 1950s. Bobby Wilson “also” lived in Abblet Village and we lived in Westfield Acres at the time.
Also, you mentioned living in an old house next to the tracks across from the Acres. Was the house by the shortcut path that was worn across the tracks to the Acres and did the front of the house face toward Westfield Avenue? If so, the house may be the same house that was the subject of a painting I did from my second floor window in the Acres for my 10th grade art class at WWHS in 1956.
Hey Ken,
The next time Bob and I attend a Freedom Concert for our Troops, we will have our photo taken with Sean Hannity….. that should really excite you. HaHa. We attended the concert last year in Duluth, Ga. Debra and her husband Bill attended the concert in San Diego, Ca last year, also.
Cara and I attended a rally “just before” the concert (at the Marriot, in Duluth, Ga) this year and heard Sean Hannitty, Oliver North, and John Voight speak. We took photos with our cell phones….. but did not have the opportunity to be in any photos.
Hey Peg Marks De Board,
How did you like the photo of Cara, Debra, and I with our mustaches? HaHa
Hey All East Camdenites,
You can take the girl out of East Camden; but you can’t take East Camden out of the girl….. at 70 years of age, I just jumped 20 feet from the top of our dock into the lake….. the year I lose my nerve, is the year I hang it up!
So…. once a year….. I will “Go Jump in the Lake”. Ha Ha
“Pain is inevitable; but misery is optional…. so stick a geranium in your hat and be happy!”
Do you happen to know if the house by the RR tracks you painted, burned down in the late 50s or early 60s? A friend of mine, & I, were exploring a burned out house by the tracks, & found 2 kittens which we took home, & the one I kept (a tabby, the other was a black cat) was the first of many our family had over the years. Just curious if it’s the same house…
Hey Dave,
I don’t remember the house burning down. We left the Acres in the late spring of 1958. We were living on Haddon Avenue when Cara was born in July of that year.
It would really be a coincidence if we are all talking about the same house, Huh?
The house I painted had a porch on the front with a railing running around it.
Hey East Camdenites,
Dave Baker is now on face book….. Debra called me and told me last night. So come on all you slackers… get with the program! HaHa.
I don’t remember a front porch, but there may have been one…it’s been around 50 years…that would be a coincidence…wonder if Dennis had a couple of kittens around that time…?
I grew up on Eutaw Ave in the early 70s. The address was 209 Eutaw. I was five in 1971 when my parents moved from Mapleshade. The neighborhood as I understand was going downhill by the time we arrived. Our block was nice but a block over here or there and I would get jumped by gangs. I went to Cramer elementary and used to walk to Dudley Grange park and hop trains. My memories of this time are fuzzy but I do remember overall it was an adventure. We moved to Merchantville by 1980 (thank God). It is great this site was put together. I gives me a picture of east Camden I didn’t really experience.
Todd, welcome to the site, and thanks for your post. You lived on Eutaw through the 70’s when many of us here were in high school at Wilson. I think by 1980, most of us had moved out also. My parents left the end of 1981 from 32nd Street, as the neighborhood was taking a turn for the worse then. They decided it was time to go when most of the neighbors they had known for years, were long moved, and they were robbed by a new neighbor who had moved in next door.
Skeeter, we got clobbered pretty good here at the Shore… heavy rain, severe winds, and the power was out for about five hours on Friday morning. Many trees down in the area. I’m still cleaning up yard debris. There is a large limb that broke in a tree over my driveway, it’s wedged between two other branches, but I need to get up there and cut the limb down. Waiting for the ground to dry out a little, so my ladder has a good footing…LOL
Also Todd Edwards, are you related to any of the Edwards family that were from the area of Rogers Avenue and Rt. 130 in Pennsauken in the 60’s and 70’s? They are cousins of mine.
I can relate to everyones memories here even though we’re from a different generation. It makes me remember the best of the area and I am also a huge history buff. I remember going to the Dudley Grange Library and loving the old smells and exploring the place. It was almost scary for me but I loved the feeling like it was haunted. I now can look at what was going on with the civil rights movement, riots and MLK getting shot that contributed to the way I was treated as a young child, being called a white cracker and getting jumped. I was caught in the cross-fire of a tumultuous time. I wonder what contributed to the rapid social changes that occurred in the area. I was researching the history of the area and was quite shocked to learn of the killing spree that guy went on in the 30s I think it was. Was anybody here there or growing up there at that time.
No Ken, I have been researching my family tree and didn’t know much past my father until recently. My father was the product of a WW2 fling with my grandmother around the Naval base in Philly. So he was getting shipped out. He came from the Edwards familly in Frostburg, Maryland. He was the youngest of 13 with his father and grandfathers being coal miners. Actually it was my great-great grandfather who came from Wales in the late 1860s or 70s and married an Irish girl who just came over with her parents. Also coming for the coal mines. Maybe more info than u needed or wanted but wanted to share.
Todd, the late 60’s and early 70’s were troubled times in Camden… in a two month period in ‘69, three Camden police officers were gunned down. On July 5th, 1969, Officers Charles Sutman and George Shultz were gunned down and killed while responding to a domestic call, and two months later, on September 2nd, Officer Rand Chandler was shot and killed by an assassin from a rooftop. The shooter of Sutman and Schultz was apprehended. The killer of Chandler, was never caught. All three officers were from the same November ‘68 Police Academy class. There was also the riots of ‘69 and ‘71, after which a lot of families moved out of Camden. Things did calm down a little in the mid 70’s, which were for the most part peaceful years in Camden, but by the late 70’s things were talking a turn for the worse… the Turkey Day shootings at the football game between Camden and Wilson, the beginning of the rise of organized gangs etc…
Howard Unruh who shot and killed the thirteen people in Cramer Hill in 1949, was recently discussed on the FaceBook sister site to this site. He attended Cramer School and Woodrow Wilson during his youth in Camden, and lived as a child at 37th and Westfield. Unruh is still a patient/inmate at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, he is 88.
I was just reading the Cherry Hill Mall section and I can’t believe you guys knew Crazy Ed. When we moved to Merchantville I met him and he was a huge part of my childhood memories. I read somewhere he lived in The Sycamore Apts. which I think was in Merchantville. We would see him almost every day. He would tell stories about having Superman or Spiderman over to his place for tea or whatever. And the Mall was our lives. By 1979 we were spending every quarter we could get our hands on at the Video Arcade. Since most of you folks on here are a little older than me-I now remember some of the high school age kids some very cool cars. So how about some fun.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR…Look forward to seeing a long list.
Also I am looking for a friend. His name was Andrew Johnson and came from a large African American family of 14 or 15. He was my age (born in 1966) but had quite a few older brothers and sisters. They lived in the area where most folks here say they lived. Sorry I can’t remember the street. His mother would take care of my brothers and I sometimes. I heard his father was killed in some sort of vehicle accident where he was decapitated. Hoping some of this info rings a bell. He was a wonderful friend and his family was very good to ours. Thanks
Todd I have been enjoying your postings and I appreciate your memory of details, I love the details. You speak of first cars mine was a 67 Chevy impala I bought off my brother for 250 bucks. It had a 327 engine I think,(for a guy that loves details I can’t ever remember many LOL) but anyway it had a trunk that held 6 people, we know this as it held them when we would sneak in at the Pennsauken Drive-in theater, we were a poor group, even at 32 cents for a gallon of gas we never had more then a 1/2 tank at a time. I also wonder if it was because of those Saturday night runs to the movies they finally developed a 5 dollar a car load price for Tuesdays showings. The old impala was a big heap but it got us all around in my senior year at Wilson (class of 76).
You also mentioned you were a history buff. If you really step back and look at things you will see not just in our stomping grounds but America as a whole was headed for drastic changes, with higher crime, violence, drugs and racism raising it’s ugly head. As you take that closer look you will see the turning point having it’s greatest push in 1976 our bicentennial year. It always stuck with me that our grad class of 76 was the start of something big for us as individuals but also the start of something big for the country. So what would be a benchmark for us as classmates could be noted as a benchmark for change in America. Just my POV and something to ponder.
HARRY L … at last I suffered the worst weekend of my sports side of life. My beloved Reds finally lost the game that took them out of contention. Now all of my efforts go towards my beloved Phillies and they need all of our support. If that was not enough, anger getting the best of Ms. Williams causing a bizarre turn of events on the tennis courts (she is one of my fav’s her and her sister of course) so that went down hill and not to be out done my beloved Cincinnati Bengals. While the Eagles marched to an easy victory and someone’s beloved Cowboys chalked up a joyful win, my Bengals went down in a blaze of glory with 28 seconds left ahead 7-6 (yes football not baseball score) a simple down and out turned into touchdown and we lose 12 -7, oh the pain, oh the humanity. I can’t wait for Roller Derby to start back up. See you in the play-offs.
I got started late,my first car was in 1966 at age 24. It was a brand new.no frills Chevy Corvair .3 speed ,floor shift.
My future wife had the sporty 65 Monza & had the fume & oil leak problems.
Mine though had no problems at all.
Back then gas was about 29 cents a gallon. I put 3 dollars in the tank & could drive all around for about two weeks.
Total price,I believe,was under $2,000.00
I borrowed $500 for the down payment from my future father in law,& my 36 month loan required a $50,00 monthly payment…LOL
Thought I would share this information about ST. JOSEPH’S POLISH CHURCH . The second annual reunion of alumni of St. Joseph’s Grammar School, South Camden, will take place Sunday, September 20th. The event will follow the 10:30 AM. Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, 10th and Mechanic Streets. Former students and their guests will gather in the Parish Hall to reminisce and to review PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE PARISH ARCHIVES. Refreshments will be served.
K.Barr……sounds like a rough weekend of sports for you…the only thing that would have made for a better sports wknd for me would have been an eaglets/giants loss, which of course did not happen…lol I happened to just catch the tennis match when Williams threatened to ’shove this racket down your throat” after the foot fault {the line judge’s mouth did look fairly wide, but not wide enough for a tennis racket…lol} apparently that was her second outburst of the match, she reportedly broke a racket earlier….I think McEnroe was loving it! 10k fine, and possible future penalties? just a minnow in the ocean for her bank account……as far as sportsmanship, pathetic. I also happened to see “the shot” by federer….didn’t jimmy connors make 1 of those back in the 80’s? Phillies looking good w/the exception of the closer, Lidge almost blew the 5-2 lead in the 9th against the n.y. mutts….Manuel may have to consider bringing back the ‘Wild Thing’ Mitch Williams if no one wants to bring their A game into the 9th. see ya
Thanks a bunch for creating this site! It is a lot of fun looking through the old pics that bring up memories I haven’t visited in many years! My brother Mike Wright found the site and we have been sharing info. about it ever since. If anyone out there remembers my brother and I (Gary Wright) feel free to contact us. You can e-mail me through my website: http://www.davidgarywright.com, as I am a potter and a high school art teacher. Anyway, thx again Ken! DGW
Ken, I really appreciate your comments along with all the sharing here. I knew I was a car guy from the age of 5 when I saw my first Mustang. My kindergarden teacher at Cramer had one and I loved it. And again I remember looking at you “cool” high school kids with the cool cars with Craiger wheels and that 60s rake. Thanks Ken
Ken,
A hearty thank you for all your efforts in creating and managing this site.
It’s clear that your efforts have brought joy to many former East Camden residents.
All the best,
“Triple B” My condolences brother, I think my Yankees are trying to form a Hockey Team. LOL Hopefully they can stay ahead of the pack, Still the best team since the break, Should give them a good advantage in the playoffs, Not to mention the AL All Star win for homefield in the “Series” if we get that far.
Todd, Welcome to memory lane, The ’60s and ’70s were a truly great time for cars, “MUSCLE” You name it someone you knew drove it! The first car I owned was a ‘67 Dodge Coronet Convertible, Ken, if memory serves me you had a neighbor with a pretty Bad-Ass GTO, Who could forget Gary Fioretti’s Vega, w/327 which I think he later swapped out for a 350, Nasuti had a Camaro ‘67 I believe, Mike Janice’s 60’s RoadRunner, Rich Kirby’s 70’s RoadRunner, I have some fond memories of cruising Weber’s on Rt 38 and Drag Racing light to light towards Cherry Hill Mall,
Watching the Drag Races on Front Street and Delaware Ave in Philly on Saturday nights, Memories time can’t erase.
Hey Bake, good to hear from you, the Yanks as a hockey team now thats too funny. We will keep it real as the play-offs approach. Dipping into the rest of your comments, I also remember the Front Street Drag Races there was just something in the air those summer nights on Saturday watching races eating Philly pretzels and dodging the cops, oh to be young again, LOL.
Bake, the red GTO on the 32nd Street Hill, it was most often parked in the little side lot of the Westfield Towers, belonged to the Sabatinis – either Tom or Jules. I don’t remember the car moving much from the lot, they mostly worked on it there, or it seemed like they did for a couple years. Tony Lope, he lived on Biedeman Ave. in the Acres, later had an older model GTO when we were seniors in high school, his was red also, with a black roof I believe. he had an Impala before that, that I think he bought from Paul Rose. We took the Impala winter camping in Upstate NY the November of senior year, and Tony drove the thing over a snow covered dirt road, over a mountain to the camp. Ended up tearing the muffler off, and we drove home a few days later, five hours, with the muffler barely holding in place.
My first car… my Dad’s ‘65 Falcon Wagon, I sort of inherited it briefly after my Dad got a Pinto Wagon in ‘76, then I think he gave it to my brother in law. First car I actually bought was another Pinto Wagon – ‘74, but soon traded that in for a ‘78 Ford F-150 pick-up, and I have had many Ford pick-ups since…. along with a number of minivans…LOL Currently have a Ford F-150 with Super Club Cab, four doors, and it has more room in it than any minivan I ever had.
You are right Ken the car did belong to Jules was very nice and fast. I remember Jules used to take me for rides in it,thing would hardly stay on the road!
I grew up in Camden and went to many different schools. Lived at 8th & Fern and went to Northeast School & Pyne Point, moved to 35th & Rowe and went to Davis, Cramer then Wilson. Got married and moved to Cramer Hill. Want to thank everyone who worked on this site, it was a thrill to see it and read the write ups on firefighters, Esp. Austin Marks (my uncle) and (John P Gryckiewicz, my fatherin law.
Welcome to the site cuz! I know Charlie Moy will be getting in touch as he and Wayne Marks were childhood buddies. I didn’t realize you attended so many of the Camden schools. You could probably start your own site!
Jackie Marks Gryckiewicz,
If you are the person I think you are, then we met one time in the late 50’s.
My best friend was Bruce Marks. Wayne is a couple years older than me,but we knew each other thru Bruce.
Bruce,Myself,John Porter,Jesse Wilbourne,Joe McCool & Dave Nicholson were more like brothers (in those days) than just friends. John is in Maple Shade,Dave in Louisiana,I am in Pennsauken.
The rest saddly have passed away.
I lost touch with every one of them in the mid to late 60’s. When I got out of the Army, they all had married & moved away. If only we had the internet then,I may have located them all,the way I did John & Dave about a year or two ago.
I rember Bruce taking me to an apartment in Stockton Station I believe, where I met you & your husband ,they called in Greg. Is that correct? We were driven there either by Wayne,or John Porter,I can’t remember now.
I am a short gut ,5′2″ tall & in those days was skinny & had dark brown hair. My name is Charles Moy,but they call me Skeeter. My close friends & family still do…lol
I am now 67 years old & my memory isn’t what it used to be.
If you have any pictures of Bruce & Wayne or any stories to share, please contact me at moy3rd@yahoo.com
Yes, I’m Bruces sister, and that was our apartment when we were first married. I still miss him everyday. Wayne is in FL, his health isn’t great. He had a stroke about a year ago. Joe McCool is the one I remember the most. Before he died he met Bruce ( my nephew) at a bowling alley. He heard the name “Bruce Marks” over the intercom. He said he almost passed out. He found Bruce and told him who he was, and they became very close for a short time. I even got to see Joe at a family get to gether. Did you see the picture of Wayne & Bruce with Peggy, Aut & George on the firemans website? Look for Austin Marks. Good to hear from you.
Yes I miss Bruce too, after all these years I still think of him very often as well as Joe & Jessie too. Like I said we were like brothers .
The picture you saw on the Phil Cohen website is one I sent to him.
It was sent to me by your cousin Peggy.
I had posted a picture of Bruce,Dave, Joe & John taken at the Mart back in 62 or 63 while I was away in the Arny on this site & also Phils site ,in hopes of someone knowing the whereabouts of Dave. Finally found him in Louisiana.
Also sent it to Phil for his site.
While I was viewing Phil’s section on the Fire Dept. I noticed all those similar names Austin as in Wayne “Austin” Marks…and Walter as in “Walter Bruce Marks. And I connected the dots…LOL
I sent the picture to him so he could add some info to the Fire Dept section. Did not realize he would post it.
If you or Peggy have any objections ,I will ask that it be removed. I always ask permission before doing something like that. I apologize for forgetting this time. Let me know if you or Peggy want it removed.
If you provide me with an email address I will send you that picture (with Santa) taken at the mart, just email me your address.
All my pics from those teen & early 20 years were lost in 1968 or 69.
So if you have any of Bruce ,I’d love to see them.
Please don’t remove the picture. It was taken in our living room at 370 N. 34th St. My brothers and I really think it should be on Dad’s site as his bio. didn’t mention Dad’s children and, let’s face it, we were a big part of his life and he ours! I was really pleased you had forwarded it to Phil. Phil actually sent me some info on Dad’s Mother from the Camden census which I didn’t know existed and found very interesting.
Hey Ken,
I just got onto the site and Cara is bugging me to come into the dining room to play an (after dinner) game with grandson Christian, husband Bob, and of course Cara. So…. I’ll be back later. This had better be a “good” game! HaHa.
Hey Ken,
Well, I’m back from playing “Clue” with the family. Husband Bob, determined that Mr Green did the dastardly deed in the conservatory with a lead pipe. HaHa
I remember buying this game for the kids when we lived on Remington St; but this is the first time I ever sat down to play it. Cara lored me into the dining room with a glass of “Penot Noir”. It was fun. However, I should have gotten a handicap of a few points for stupidity. HaHa.
Hey Ken Barr,
I checked out your website for “Buford Community Church” the other day.
When will your Gospel CD be ready? I did not find any reference to your CDs. We have a church near our house that broadcasts on radio for 1/2 hour on Sundays. The broadcast is mostly “just good “down home” country gospel music” that conveys the “Spirit” it represents sung by the congregation. I’d rather hear it than music by a “professional” without “Spirit”. As Phil Harris used to say: “That’s what I like about the South!”
Hello all!
I found this site bookmarked on an old computer my mother gave me for my grandson (I still can’t believe I am old enough to have grandchildrent!). I’ve just spent the afternoon reading the threads. WOW! You all brought back some really great memories for me. I couldn’t believe when I saw posts from Gary Fioretti and John Martin. What memories of you guys I have! Gary you used to tease me all thru elementary school and I had the biggest crush on you. John was always quiet and I remember that boy scout uniform. John… do you remember Paul Butler? What ever happened to him? I just recently got in touch with Donna Holzalski. She remembers all of us too.
I will also never forget George Shuck the milkman. He was the absolute nicest man I ever met. I’ll never forget when he brought me a box of chocolates and a card for my 8th birthday. Also I’ll never forget the ice chips in the summer and the popsicles.
Our family moved from 38th street in 1975 to Marlton. I graduated from Lenape in 1977. I moved to Northern Virginia back in 1995 and I’ve been here ever since. I just bought a home with my husband in Manassas and we love the small town idea, kinda like growning up in East Camden. As big as it was I always felt like I was in a small town. Seems like everyone knew everyone.
Thank you again for the walk down memory lane! It was awesome!
My email address is: vburton59@gmail.com
Valerie
Hello all. Nice site, Ken. Though I graduated from Eustace (‘77), we grew up on 27th St., just off Westfield. The Davis baseball clan included brothers Ed (WWHS ‘69) and Jim (WWHS ‘71). Sister Nancy also went to Wilson. Spent so much time playing in St. Joe’s school yard, Dudley Grange, entire summers of ‘76 & ‘77 playing tennis at the grange. Must have been a great community, since there’s so much interest in keeping up on websites. A great place to grow up, I’ve always told my kids. It’s a shame I can’t even take them down to see where I grew up.
Hey Al – It’s your old neighbor Pete from Cambridge Circle from Maple Shade. See my post from 8/29. Glad to see you on Ken’s web site. Hope you and the family are doing well.
Hey Pete. How’s Chris? Here’s some age-defining news for you..remember the “little chickie”, as Chris called her, we brought home from the hospital? Well, Alex is now a freshman at Pace Univ. in New York City majoring in theater and acting! AJ is a soph at Holy Cross HS, and Zachary is a freshman. Everyone is doing well. How are things in Maple Shade?
Unbelievable how time flies Al !!! I cannot believe your kids are that old !! I think that when you lived in the Shade, it was only Alex that was there. I think you were there in the late 80’s early 90’s correct ? There have been two owners of that house since you left, one that was there from 1992-2000 and the current owners. Chris and I are doing well, the neighborhood has not changed much, most of the same folks are still living on the block. Funny how we met back up through Ken’s web site. Always enjoyed your Xmas cards showing how big the kids were getting.
I have a challenge for you…remember the heading “Current Events in East Camden” that Ken had on the site? You have e-mailed me interesting news items from the Courier Post and I would like to see some of those posted on this site for those of us who are no longer in the ares but would enjoy the goings on in East Camden. I especially liked the 60 year update on Unruh.
I really enjoy this site and check a couple times a day and am disappointed when there are no new postings. Some news items might spur people’s memories and get the chatter going again. What do you think?
Peg, I have no problem with people posting the occasional link to a Courier Post article or other Camden related sources, as long as the focus continues to be on Camden. There is a restriction on the number of links allowed, this has had to be implemented to stop the spam attemtps, and that has worked, so has switching to this format of only allowing posts on one page.
Also there is a link to the Courier Post online site on the menu to the right under “Blogroll” near the bottom of the listings. Many people who are originally from Camden, do check the Courier site daily for news. I do, as I do not get the Courier Post.
I doubt the chatter will return to what it once was on this site. Most people now seem to be using FaceBook and posting on their own FaceBook pages, and reconnecting with the many former Camden people who are now there. And new groups for specific interests to Camden, continue to evolve there. Gary and Michael Wright, who grew up in The Acres, recently opend a group on FaceBook for former Acres residents. There are now groups for specific schools, streets, even specific summer camps individuals may have attended. If you join FaceBook and use their search window, you can probably find an interest group for most anything from your past. You can search individual class years for Wilson graduates for example, and most years, going back into the 50’s, will have anywhere from fifty to several hundred FaceBook members. And it’s easy to reconnect… if you see someone you remember, you send them a note and a friend request, if they want to reconnect with you, they accept your friend request, it is that simple.
With the high numbers of people who use FaceBook, where searching for friends from the past, and where it is easy to connect and “friend” people you want to reconnect with, I don’t understand why anyone would not check out that site. It’s free, it’s easy, and unlike here, you won’t have to wait for postings, there are plenty of postings, and back and forth banter at FaceBook, if you become an active user of all it has to offer, if you just join. I don’t see why some are still reluctant to at least check it out. For reconnecting, it cannot be beat. I suspect it will soon put sites such as Classmates out of business. Why pay for something that is free and easy at FaceBook? Why sit and wait for people to visit a site, when on FaceBook you can reconnect with more people than you ever thought was possible. It’s interesting to see each day there, what new old friend, neighbor, relative, or classmate will join. To reconnect with the past one needs to be pro-active, and seek out the reconnections, not wait for them to come to you. The place to be pro-active is on FaceBook.
Pete DiCianni, Have you checked out FaceBook yet? Most of the Class of 72 from Davis, and the Class of 76 from Wilson, are there, as well as other years. You’ll also find an amazing number of former Camden people who may have moved and left Wilson or Davis before graduating. Come check it out, everyone is there.
I reached out to Harold Melleby via his work email address at Eastern Regional School District. If he is on facebook it is under an “assumed” name….lol It would be nice to hear from him.
Hey Ken Barr,
Come on and join Ken’s East Camden FaceBook group!
I “know” that you have a lot of “good stuff” to share with us.
You have inspired me to get back into my “Art”….. I sketched a portrait of you with your “plant” on the school window sill; but tried to highlight your face and used the wrong color and spoiled it. When I complete my next attempt, I will mail it to you. (Each day I think about completing it; but am cautious that I might mess this one up too…. by being too anxious… as before.) We artists are quite “eccentric”, you know. HaHa
Hey Ken Barr,
I just read your post of Sept. 17.
If you had to “dodge the cops”, it must have been for something that Bake did. HaHa
Uh Oh, I’m in trouble with Bake, now! HaHa
Hi Ms. Inez, we are currently having some trouble with our web site at the church we can’t get in to update or change things, it has been and still is frustrating to me as you can imagine. My CD is about 3-4 weeks behind as you can imagine I am not the only one making a new CD right now, LOL. At this rate if it is done by Christmas I will be amazed, however I will keep you posted.
Harry L. to coin an old tune from Barry Manilow… LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT… GO PHILS !!! Oh the sweet sound of victory I mean VICTORY. Champs are so much better then chumps. I understand it’s a 2:30 game tomorrow to be aired on TBS out here, so I am hopeful to catch it. I have been out of touch with things the last few weeks as I have been sucked into local things sports wise and my computer crashed and lost a lot of data including this site location I had to ask Mr. Brown for a link, I am such a mess. Is everyone healthy on the Phils ? Any concerns going into the play-off’s ?
Bake, thanks for the e mails keep them coming, I never stop being amazed at some of the information you share and how heart warming they can be, yes sorry folks the truth must be leaked out Bake has a soft side and a warm heart, perhaps a side you didn’t know he had, don’t fret he still is hard core to the bone the way he is known and loved just a little leakage of warm heart now and then.
Hey Ken Barr,
Yeah, your right….. Bake “is” a pretty nice guy! He calls me a “Southern Belle” Y’all. “Why, I do declare, he certainly knows how to charm a lady, sir”. Ha Ha.
Ken B….. sorry to hear about your computer woes, when I used to use a desktop loaded with windows me/aol it would crash on a monthly basis, considered tossing it down the hill of my backyard out of frustration lol. yea, tbs locked up the initial playoff series, Moyer has groin and stomach muscle injuries, so he’s out. from what i’m hearing, Utley seems to have some nagging injuries, but the team will have to suck it up like all the others since it’s playoff time……not sure if Barry Manilow tunes are what the Phils will need to get by this year, maybe ‘EYE OF THE TIGER’ is what they need to survive, especially in the closer dept…..game time start of 2:37, with swirling 40 mph winds, should be plenty of long drives, let the playoffs begin and go PHILS!
“Triple B” You’re gonna pull the mask off the “Ol’ Lone Ranger” LOL
It’s OK Bro! I don’t think we could Dodge Philly’s finest these days, They knew we’d have to cross a bridge to get back, They’d just alert the Port Authority and wait for us! LOL Back then if you added enough air to the shocks it raised the license plate and changed the angle enough to make it hard to read! LOL Ahhhhh! The Good Ol’ Days!
Inez, A Southern Belle such as yourself could never be in trouble (Or Dutch) with me, As my Grandmother would say. I’m really not trying to
“CHARM” anyone persay, Just my way of letting you know that Chivalry is not dead, It’s merely a dormant caterpillar waiting to turn into a beautiful butterfly, There’s still a few of us that tip our hats to the ladies! In the words of Ol’ Hank “We say Grace and we say Ma’am”…
Harry, Perhaps we will see a ’50s rematch of the Phils and Yanks! I must however give props to the Twin City fellers, They’re tough when they need to be and that’s what the playoffs are all about, The regular season does’nt mean squat in October, It’s all about best of, For a series! I’m hoping we’ve got the pitching this year, I know the bats are there! Best of luck to the “Defending Champs”
Hey Buzz! You out there? I’d love for this to be the year of the Flyers!
Some fun eh!
Harry / Bake took one on the chin today, just to make things interesting I suppose. I didnt get to see the game myself, however my brother went to the game and gave me the highlights and low lights of todays action. He told me he has World Series tickets and even though the loss today, the team (Phils) have repeat on their minds and he is clearly going to be using those tickets. Although my beloved Bengals are trying to show me something now 3-1, it may very well be I will have to move if I want a winning home team. In the mean while I am thankful for you 2 guys making me feel a part of the home team dream, ya can take the boy out of the hood but you cant take the hood off the jacket…. what? never mind LOL, hey go Phil’s
rough loss last night, Hamel’s mind wasn’t in the game as his wife went into labor w/1st born….out to Colorado sat. to face 34 degree weather with a 70% chance of snow……remember the game last year with the cold rain against tampa? should be interesting….hopefully Happ will start pending how serious the injury to his leg is. even though the Phils will be in Colorado, they seem to play better ball away, may that trend continue!
Thanks Skeeter,
Mr Melleby will forever be a part of my growing up in East Camden, He treated every one of us kids in the neighborhood as one of his own, Always there with praise and encouragement, At the same time he’d balance that with a stern scolding if you deserved it, Not as the Chief but as a father figure, I always had the deepest respect for him, My heart goes out to the Melleby family, He was one of those people that truly have an effect on your life, Rest high on that mountain, God bless.
I will always remember the picture of him standing in his front yard that made the front page of the Courier Post. What a joke that paper always was. I’m going to try and make the viewing on Sun night, anyone else?
Bake & others who knew Chief Melleby,
If you use the link I provide for the Obit, there is a guest book & you can leave a message to his family.
There is a tab at the top of the Obit.
Now…I think all messages are screened before they get posted,so it won’t show up immediately. Some people assume the message did not go thru & repost several times.
Also I think via checking a box you can request notification when another entry is made. You may be able to reconnect with someone you haven’t been able to locate for years.
I was saddened to hear about Mr. Melleby, as I was last year, when I heard Mrs. Melleby had passed away. We lived next to them for about 10 years on Pelham Place, and they were wonderful neighbors. We kids were close to the Melleby kids – Harzie was in my class at Davis & WWHS. My heart goes out to them.
Hey Skeeter,
Thank You for letting us know about Police Chief Melleby. I will let Cara and Debra know. I never met Chief Melleby; but I know he was a fine person.
God Bless the Melleby family in their time of sorrow.
Hey Guys,
I’m using Cara’s computer again. I just scanned a bunch of photos for FaceBook. I could have killed Cara the other day. She had me scan to PDF instead of JPEG. I then emailed everything to Debra, who let us know that she could not use the photos that way. So I am rescanning. UGH! However, I learned how to upload to FaceBook, so I don’t have to bug Debra anymore.
I really like the “Utube” music that Ken Brown is sharing with us. He sure knows how to pick the singers. I especially get a kick out of the group that has the song in the Inuit Language!
Harry and Bake Oh the weather outside if frightful, snow first now the temps dropping tonight, the Phils take that commanding lead in the top of first but right now the Rockies are knocking on the door with 2 on 1st and third. On the football front my beloved Bengals pulled out another one and now boast a 4 and 1 record, while McNab was back for the Eagles and a check mark in their win column with Dallas winning and the New York 5 and 0 why the whole mess of us are just smack dab happy. Tied up in baseball my gosh the Rockies are just singling us to death, but it is just the first and my tired old eyes wont see much more of this. Any thoughts on why the Olympics are dumping Baseball for Golf, now I love Golf but how do you cut out Baseball it’s a worldly event.
ok K. Barr, it’s 2:21 a:m., you’re probably buzzing down a redwood in a sound sleep, and the Phillies just won 6-5 in front of 50k frozen Rockie fans. Lights out Lidge earned the save, but was shaky with 2 men on and 2 outs….maybe that will restore his confidence since that was a crucial game to regain home field advantage…..tomorrow 5p.m. edt Lee takes the mound again….hopefully he can repeat his last perfomance of a complete game….Bake, getting close to a 50’s phils/yanks remake…see ya
Go Phils, I hate to report I stayed a little longer and saw it to 5-4 Phils then out came the chain saws for sure, Harry your a better man than I ever thought I could be, true die hard fan til the end thanks for burning the torch on our behalf and WTG Phils. OMG can you believe what it will be like if we do revisit that 50 match up, I am not sure this web site could contain the blogging, LOL.
Thanks for the info on Chief Melleby. It sounds as though he was greatly loved and respected. Tho’ I didn’t know the family it brought back a memory of Fire Chief Wonsettler (sp.?) who also lived on Pellham Place in the 40’s & 50’s. This is the type of posting I was hoping you would be able to share when I left my Oct.2nd posting. Thanks!
I went to the viewing last night, Harrze has lost a bunch of weight since the last time I saw him, the girls looked great and there was sadness in the room, but I think a lot of pride. His dad was a great guy and got a chance to enjoy retirement, and grandkids, something I hope to do. I know where he works and will try and get his home email address, and maybe even get him online in the future.
Thanks for the information about Chief Melleby. I went to Davis with Harold (Jr.) and I remember the family. I have great memories of the Police Department in Camden, especially East Camden. Officer Randazzo would come to see us kids at McGraw. I remember his shiny shoes and gained a lot of respect for the police from those school visits. Thanks for keeping this site going Ken.
Peggy Marks DeBoard,
To say the Chief was a great man is an understatement. He left an impact on everyone he met or knew. As I’ve grown older I realize that all of the elders in our own little corner of heaven (known as East Camden) took the time to raise all the kids of our neighborhood in one way or another. They taught us so much about life, Respect and even ourselves, Sometimes without even knowing they did. I for one feel very fortunate to have had the privledge to be able to grow up in our little corner of Heaven called East Camden. It seems to me that in your time the foundation for our era was already being laid,
I guess that’s why when asked where did you grow up we all say…
“East Camden” with pride!
Dave Martin,
I hope you can get Harzie to post, Or even allow us to get in touch with him and the rest of the family, Ted, Diane, Patty, and Linda. It would be nice to reminisce with them again, They were all a part of growing up on Pelham Place, One of the greatest streets in East Camden!
(I can say that without bias, My front door was on 34th St. LOL)
Dave Baker
Butchie Grimes–If I remember correctly you were in the same grade as I. Was it Mr. Cohens class? William Mack, John Brooks, Natalie Aceto, Francine Scavetta, I could go on. How have you been? Are you on Facebook? I’ve just re-connected with Carole Bottjer and Dawn Henry, I am looking for Francine and Lydia. Do you remember them? Any info would be appreciated. I am on Facebook. (I hope I have the right fella, if not I’m terribly sorry.)
Terry, yes I remember and it was Mr. Cohens class.last time I saw Lydia was many years ago, think it was at DR. Jekyll’s. I live in Va. are you still in that area? Lydia webb was her name. How have you been all these years?
Butch (Theodore)—I live in Pittsgrove, NJ. I am married with two sons.
I moved away right after 7th grade. I have such great memories of East Camden and Davis School. Join Facebook, it is a great way to keep in touch with everyone and reconnect with classmates. Wouldn’t it be great to have a reunion with the people from Davis, to see how everyone’s lives have been. Facebook will probably be the closest we can get to a reunion. I hope to see you on facebook. Take care of yourself
Hi Ken,
I just found this page. I grew up at 32 and Mitchell and was checking out Bob’s Market page, I am Claire Lyle’s little sister that went to H H Davis in the 1960’s until 5th grade. I think I might have a couple of my class photos, I’ll look into it and see if I can get them to you.
What a surprise to see this extensive website. I have a feeling we knew each other but just can’t place you. Thank you.
Hi Janis, I’m glad you found the site. I do believe we may have known each other at Davis, as there was a Lyle girl who lived across from Bob’s and was in a few of my classes. What years were you at Davis? Did you start Kindergarten in the ‘63-’64 school year? Also if you look at the class photo under “Davis 66-67, Grade 3″ – is that you, third row from the top, third kid from the left, between Michael and Gary Wright? I have a memory of that girl living across from Bob’s! Also the same girl was in my 5th Grade class, Mr. Horsley’s, and is pictured in the photo – “Davis 68-69 Grade 5″ – second row from the bottom between Dave Nevius and Greg Torrence. Many of those “kids” from those classes are on FaceBook, and have also visited this site. In the 3rd Grade photo I am to the right of the teacher, Miss Brill, and in the 5th Grade photo, my name is under my photo.
I printed the Courier Post article to show to a friend whose parents were close friends of the Cohens. Thanks for keeping us updated!
I remember that day…my Mom, brother and I jumped in the car and drove to River Road to see what was going on. We were shocked as Unruh used to pass my grandparents house, on N. 36th St., on his way to church and on several occasions had bible discussions with my grandfather. (More like bible arguments!)
Jim, I have a copy of the Sept. 16, 1950 Saturday Evening Post that covers the whole event. Surprisingly graphic pictures which wouldn’t be allowed in today’s news.
Peggy Marks Deboard, Ron Sviben is living in Redondo Beach Ca.,he recently was in New Jersey for a memorial service for his ex-wife Karen and to visit his daughter Lisa.
Classmates had a special offer ,$9.95 for a year,so I bit the bullet & signed up.
So far I have found about 20 people. Classmates from Davis & Cramer, friends from N.Camden,Cramer Hill, and Eastside.
I sent them all emails today, plus posted a message on their boards.
I am hoping to get some replies, but others have said they struck out most of the time.
Any comments? Am I expecting too much?
I am older than a lot of you & I have not had any luck on facebook,so what the hey…its only $10 for a full year.
Skeeter
Skeeter, a $10 investment for a year of Classmates is a good deal. And you seem to have already found some people you knew from Camden.
I think one just needs to keep in mind the reality of Classmates, and that is that many post their information on the site, but do not join as paying members, and so they are unable to retrieve posts, emails, etc… that may have been left on the page by others. It’s like dangling a carrot before a hungry rabbit, if you are not a paying member, you cannot gain access to even mail sent directly to you. That is wrong.
Also don’t give up on FaceBook, have you searched the listings for Woodrow Wilson for the graduating classes that coincide with your age group? There are listings of FaceBook members who went to Wilson in the 50’s. What you need to do is list yourself as a member of a class, and then go to the section”Friends” then click on “Find Friends” and there will be a place to click on Wilson people from that year, and it will bring up the list of everyone who has listed on their profile that they are connected to Wilson for that year. From that page, you can go to the top of the list and click on any other year and it will bring up all who have identified themselves as an alumni of those years. You must list yourself as an alumni on your profile first though in the section for “Education” as being connected to a specific class, for you to appear on the list, and for you to be able to search the list for that year, as well as other years from the same school. I hope this helps.
Ken,
Thanks for the info about facebook. I am not very computer savvy to begin with & I have a lot of trouble navigating around on the facebook site.
I tried searching individuals by name, but if they do not show pictures or provide information about the time frame ,its not productive at all.
I did not realize that a search of schools was available to me..
Once again, thanks, you’ve helped a lot & I will try the schools.
We grew up with him and have a special page for him, our beloved Soupy Sales passed away today at age 83. I believe we can all think of at least one time he made us smile and tons of times he made us laugh. Although he got his start here in Cincinnati his work in the Philadelphia area will remain his greatest accomplishments. Prayers for the family and friends that were the closest to him. Rest in peace, as we will all smile every time we see a creamed pie. Check out his page on this site
“Gone is the King of the Innuendo,” A sense of humor so simple that it bordered on sophistication, Often imitated… Never equaled! I’m sure he’s making them laugh on high as we speak… Thanks Soup!
Thoughts and prayers to the family.
Bake, GO YANKEE’S If last nights game is any indication of the intensity the Yank’s are bringing to the World Series, this will be the Series of all series to watch. Buckle up butter cups this is gonna be a great one. Phil’s in 6.
I found an old friend on facebook yesterday. We attended H.H. Davis in the 50’s just after I moved from Rosedale Ave to 29th & Westfield. He lived on Westfield too around 30th or 31st,I believe.
His name is Joseph C. Saii…pronounced SAY-EYE.
If you knew Joe,you can find him listed on the class of 1960 WWHS.
And so it starts! Gotta love it fellers! Best of the NL East against the best of the AL East! What a match up! Wednesday can’t come soon enough!
Harry? Where you at Bro? I figured you’d be the first one talkin’ smack! LOL
I’m probably the only East Camdenite rooting for the Bronx Bombers! LOL
I know when I was younger it was easy to get guys to trade you Yankee ballcards for Phillies. LOL Who knew what those cards were gonna be worth today? Good Luck Phils fans, I gotta feeling the Yanks are hungry!
Then again now that the Phils have had a taste of winning one… Who knows? I just hope it’s not decided by the officiating, We all know how shoddy that’s been so far! Ladies and Gentlemen… Rematch of the ’50s,
Like old Yogi said, “It’s Deja-vu all over again!” LOL
Bake,
I have been a Yankee fan since the 1950’s and the Phillies my #2 team. This year the Phillies have been the best Philly team of my time and to be honest I had a difficult decision to make. Needless to say I am staying with my Yankees. If the Yankees should loose, and I do not think they will, I will not feel as bad as normal. This should be a series to remember.
Now Bake you know we love you bro and we can’t let a litle sportsmanship cause you to lose your outlook on life LOL. There will be no taunting, or smack talking or street slinging chatter not even a sorry about your luck……… NOT !!! Phil’s in 6
Couldn’t agree with you more Freddy, this is going to be the series of all series, I for one am looking forward to some great baseball, regardless of the outcome…. well Phil’s in 6
Gentlemen, first of all, congrats for the best teams making the World Series! the Mets fans will not be enjoying this series since the Phils/Yanks are their rivals….the west coast will also not be enjoying the series, but who cares about the “left coast” anyway….lol. Phillies are already in Sabathia’s head, since they defeated him last year in Milwaukee, despite the fact Yankee fans believe he’s improved since he’s a Yankee. the Phils hitters need to be patient w/Pettitte, he’s more of a finesse pitcher, Phil’s batters seem to have had a lot of patience and “good eyes” this season…..as far as Burnette, the Phils should feast on his fast ball. Phillies need to get into the Yanks bullpen asap, since they don’t want to be down a run late and have to face Rivera….we all know the Phils 2/3 wins early in the 09 season means squat since Myers and Condrey got the wins and won’t be playing……..as far as bad calls, I believe the rule has been changed to allow the more senior umps in the World Series even though they worked earlier playoff games….the Phillies imho are better than any team the Yanks played in the playoffs….should be a great World Series.
Freddy, Glad to hear from another Yankees fan from East Camden.
The Phillies are also my second team to root for, Truth be told as a kid my Uncle lived right down the street from Connie Mack Stadium where he would take me once and awhile, That’s where I was introduced to Johnny Callison and was so glad to see him finish his career as a Yankee in ‘74.
Brother Ken, You keep mentioning Phillies in six? Does that mean it’ll go six games before they lose? LOL I may have sat in the back in Mrs. Ruberg’s class but if I do the math, You believe the Phils can take four games from the Yanks… Is that three at home and one in NY? What happens if they split the first two in Philly? Do they take two from the Yanks or three at Yankee Stadium? I love ya Bro’… You so CRAZY! LOL
Oy-Vey Harry! I’m a firm believer that in the post season you can throw out all the regular season stats… However if you insist… The Yankees have’nt lost a series since the All-Star break! I’ll admit the Phillies have improved their team since last year, So have the Yanks. CC has already gotten the monkey off his back as far as playoffs are concerned, Not to mention a key factor in his success… Run support!
Both of these worthy teams have the ability to score runs almost at will,
I think it will all come down to who makes mistakes and if the other team can capitalize on them, I’m curious to see the line on this series! LOL
Bake,
The first two games are at Yankee Stadium, your comment above infers they are at Philly. I agree with everthing you said and would add that both teams have an X factor and both X’s are in pitching. Cole Hammels and A J Burnett are unpredictable they could go either way. Since everything points to a balanced series and if I was commissioner, I would make them play a 9 game series. Why stop there let them play until the BCS starts.
I stand corrected, Brett Meyers will be on the Phil’s W.S. lineup, (M. Cairo, an ex-Yankee, off the roster), as reported by ESPN. Bake, time for the ex-factor A-Rod to get back to his post-season slump….lol
Freddy, You’re right, I must of sat in the back in Geography too! LOL
I’d be amazed if Philly could take four from the Yanks.
Harry, Talk about being in a pitchers head, Martinez has a long history with the Yankees, If ever there was a time for him to implode…
Talk about an X-factor!
LOL
Yeah, Bake, my Uncle Ron used to take me to Phillies games at Connie Mack stadium – too long ago to remember many details, but I loved to go…still think a Phillies repeat would be sweet…we’ll see! LOL
Harry / Bake / and all, was A-Rod there tonight, oh thats right 3 strike outs, hey hat’s off to LEE pitched a great game, not sure what Rollins was thinking in the 9th with that throw to first but anyway, Phil’s looked good coming off 6 day break. A Rod doesnt come into this series batting 430+ and remain silent, we have to keep our eye on him for the balance of this thing. Sometimes everything just goes right like the little pop to Lee and then his behind the back grab up the middle and such, shows that when its going your way its going your way. Phil’s got the wheels turn just got to keep it going.
Ken Barr, ditto to all of the above, Lee also set a record with a .052 era w/30 or more innings pitched in post season, surpassing Rivera….with this masterpiece….watching the corporate Yankee ticket holders file out of the park when the Phillies went up 4-0 was priceless!
Harry, you saw that also, I said to Glenda I don’t think their going to the bathroom together,LOL and the empty seats with every camera shot from 1st base line, what did they think no one would notice,LOL. You are right Skeeter hats off to the 2 of them
In true fashion the city of Brotherly love extending that compassion to the home team fans of the Yankees, by allowing them a win tonight. In all sincerity, the Yanks did win the game but it would appear they Phil’s LOST the game. There was something different about tonight’s play all the way around. A-Rod still silenced, Jetter’s 3 strike outs, officiating got a couple of things wrong tonight and the strike zone seamed to change from time to time. Phil’s may have left Pedro in too long, looking for a Lee repeat, but reality is the core block has to produce, Utley, Howard and Werth and that didn’t happen and when it doesn’t, I don’t see the odds in the favor of chalking up a win. Yank’s tie it up new series starts Saturday should be a good one.
offense definitely not there tonight, and add the fact that the ump was giving Burnette 2 to 5 inches outside of homeplate…..Werth faling asleep off 1st base and Utley hitting into a double play with Howard on deck didn’t help much either…..looks like they aren’t afraid of Rivera though, which is a good sign….better luck Sat. later
Just my opinion, but I think the fast pace of Lee,kept the Yanks on edge. Pedro allowed the game to slow to a snails pace & the Yanks settled in & figured him out.
Howards silent bat isn’t helping much,,but I believe they said he has the flu,or at least a fever.
My suggestion is to just hit the ball & get on base, don’t try to knock it outta the park every time at bat & good things will happen !
My son who knows more about stats than I do,predicted a game two loss.
He says the Phils have a history of losing game two.
Is that correct?
Series tied :
Phils 1 Yankees 1
I think you are right Skeeter they need to lay off the long ball and work on the offensive fundamentals. As for the 2nd game loss stats not sure, but if it’s followed by 3 win’s, I’ll take it.
I could list a bunch of things but they would most likely come off as excuses, so I don’t think I will offer much about tonights game, only to say A-Rod mounting a come back and the Phil’s sticks not there and Phil’s are making a habit of leaving starting pitchers in a little longer then maybe they should. But NO Excuses,LOL the Yankees won the ballgame tonight and it’s time for the Phil’s to keep their heads up and in the game, lots more series to be played.
I guess I will be the outcast for this topic but the Yankees played good ball last night. What I do not like is not executing 100% evertime such as Posada getting thrown out at 2nd in the ninth and Cabrera at 1st on a routine grounder. Both players were trotting. One more win and the 27th title goes to the Yankees. I think the biggest disappointment for the Phils is their quiet bats.
Freddy it’s all good glad to see your comments and I noticed that also and was really surprised, I mean like or dislike Jetter or ARod, at least they hustle, the get down the line, they encourage others and if a single can be made into a double you can count on them stretching it out. Yes on the Phillies and the silence to the wooden sticks they are or are not swinging. I thought when Howard hit that single and then stole 2nd he was going to come out of his slump only to pop fly out his next at bat. Not a real MVP showing right now. Of course I am not putting it all on one man you saw the game you know who did and who did contribute. Freddy you are not alone BAKE who has yet to report in on this is also an avid Yankee fan, and I will share with you his off line comments that followed up mu thoughts that the Phil’s have got to get back to playing FUNDAMENTAL baseball. The long ball is nice and they prove they can hit them but sadly no men on at the time. Hats off to the Yanks for pulling out all the stops so to speak, bunting, singles, doubles, stealing bases, sacrifice flies, ALL the offensive bread and butter of fundamental WINNING baseball. The Phil’s were loaded with it in the Play-off’s but have since left some stuff in the ball-bag. On the upside a nod to the play on the Phil’s for Victorino and Utley and even Ruiz coming around for some action. Frustration is getting the better of my beloved Phil’s but it aint over yet,LOL been down before only to rise up again we shall see what we shall see, did I say Phil’s in 7, LOL Game 5 keeps Phil’s alive….. Go Phillies !!!
You did the same thing I did…called it Marlton Pike. I never remember it being Marlton Avenue, always Marlton Pike. ‘Course I had Remington Avenue/Place wrong for many years, too!
Freddy/Ken
Even though the Yanks are only firing on six cylinders, With the Phillies firing on four, The Yanks have been able to put something together when needed. Girardi like his predecessor Torre has kept the Yanks in the manufacture runs mindset (Traditionally National League Ball) I think he’s a very underrated Mgr, The real key to the Yanks success has been the ability to capitalize on the moment. The Phillies are a damn good team, They just seem to have lost focus, I was stunned to hear Hammels comments about wishing the season was over! That’s something I would’ve expected from Pedro. This series is far from over if Lee has another stellar performance. He could give the Phils a much needed shot in the butt! The Yanks need to slow his pace down and work the counts, If they can get to the bullpen they stand a better chance, AJ will have to duplicate his last performance, Even then if Lee’s on we could be headed back to the Bronx, I’d be stunned if Philly could take two there…
To quote the most quotable Yankee! “It ain’t over til it’s over” LOL
Peggy, I never heard it called Marlton Avenue either, it was always Marlton Pike during the 60’s and 70’s, even buses that ran down the street had “Marlton Pike” on their route signs.
BAKE, to believe your writing and then see it played out as if you planned the entire game tonight. Lee did pitch well and the Bat’s were located by the Phil’s. The thing we have been looking to se happened surely did and that was the Phil’s getting back to playing fundamental baseball. The Yanks of course having then don’t go down without a fight made this evening even more stressful then before. Bake you always bring out some thought provoking comments and ideas and yes we are coming back to the Bronx. Can the Phil’s win 2 now? … we shall see what we shall see. I have not heard from our good friend Harry L. his comments are always important to me, I trust he is ok, he may have flown his private jet to the Game tonight, perhaps he will email later. The Yanks are tuff, and the Phil’s know how to win…. it sure will be interesting.
Skeeter, thanks for sharing that link, wow the old Red Radio and the AM dial, back in the day to have a radio made you something it was a status type thing, how cool was that to have a Red RCA model I can almost feel the hardened plastic,LOL. Have we come a long way or what?
private jet? Ken, are you confusing me with Warren Buffet who just bought out the Burlington Northern rail system and drove up the stock price to around a 100/share from 76/share yesterday? I would settle for an ultra-light plane with my commute though…….lol as far as the W.S., the 3 man rotation for the Yanks may be taking a toll on its pitchers. the Phils have to get to Pettitte early, since his history is to give up runs early…..hopefully Utley will get another homer and pass R. Jackson for most homers in a W.S. I don’t think a shutout is in order for either team in game 6, too many good hitters on both teams….it’s about time Howard’s bat came to life, he’s seen all 3 starters now, nothing left to figure out. game 6 should be another gut wrencher! see ya
Thanks, Skeeter for the RCA link – the image of the dog (lil’ Nipper) & the phonograph, is one of my earliest memories from way back, living on Dudley Street (3 or 4 years old), with RCA TVs,radios, phonographs, RCA records (remember them? 78s, 45s, 33 1/3 rpm LPs)…having my father (Curt), working for RCA, it was a big part of our lives…
Dave and Curt, you can buy or rent a condo loft in the old original RCA building in Camden on the waterfront. It’s been completely rehabilitated, and the stained glass Nipper windows in the tower were restored also, and are still part of the building.
Dave, Not a problem brother, I agree, Go Phillies…
Back home, After game six! LOL (could’nt resist! It was too easy!)
There ya’ go Freddy, That should take the heat off you! LOL
“Trip B” You did say Phils in six! You did’nt mention win or lose? LOL
No doubt Dave, is there a cloning machine for Phil’s to make a few Lee’s,LOL. And LOL to you BAKE, you Phillies wanna-be I did leave out the win or lose part of my Phil’s in 6 didn’t eye, you laughed then and your laughing now I see you I see the grin shinning from ear to ear, that ole boy Trip B fighting of the accumulation of gray hair and gray matter on the brain, but hold on tight to the EDGE OF YOUR SEAT game on tonight I smell victory in the air.
August 23, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Ken,
Does this mean comments will no longer be shuffled to the various headings and no more comments will appear on any of the sites? If so, we who have kept up with the chatter will have read everything and the site becomes closed for us. Am I understanding this correctly?
Peg
August 23, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Thanks.
August 23, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Good job Ken!
August 23, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Ken,
Thanks for the speedy clarification. I do understand it was becoming a monumental task for you and your wife. Let’s face it, life is too short to be bound to the computer day and night. You have a family and deserve to spend time with them. Speaking for all who have enjoyed this site, we thank you.
Peg
August 23, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Thanks Jeanette and Peg. The site will continue, it’s just more efficient this way with one page to post on, rather than 254 (yes, we have that many separate pages here). And I will continue to post photos and links that are relevant to the site as they are forwarded to me.
August 23, 2009 at 11:53 pm
As I’ve said before, this site has been a wonderful connection to the memories of the East Camden I remember, & reconnect with some people I haven’t seen for 40-50+ years in some cases.
Thanks again, Ken!

August 24, 2009 at 12:42 am
Tom lowe that is what I know about phyllis. i am happy to report after 4 months everyone is out of the hospital for now and doing better. Mom and dad will be on oxygen the rest of their lives and michele will start chemo in sept. after she recovers from gaulbadder removeial and 1/3 lung removed.
August 24, 2009 at 6:54 am
ken, i also commend you on your efforts. this was and is a wonderful time portal back to a place and time that all of us cherish. jim lang.
August 24, 2009 at 8:09 am
August 24, 2009 at 8:47 am
Harry L. By the way did you see that Triple Play Oh My Gosh Utley is the man. Every now and then you got to say… I can’t believe my eyes…. Believe it baby, Phil’s turning things around.
August 24, 2009 at 10:13 am
Hi Ken,
I really appreciate your efforts and have enjoyed finding out about my old pals in E. Camden. Thanks very much.

August 24, 2009 at 10:37 am
August 24, 2009 at 10:43 am
And think of this as one stop shopping for your comments and posts, no need to travel around the various pages looking for all the recent ones. But you can still leisurely view the other pages, the pictures, and past comments.
August 24, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Thanks Ken , Great site
August 24, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Ken Barr, that was 1 wild game against the Mets. inside the park hr, errors at the worst time for the Phils, and an unassisted triple play by Bruntlett which more than made up for his 9th inning error. Ken Brown, 1 stop posting, probably the most efficient way to go……way to go Ken.
August 24, 2009 at 7:39 pm
South Jersey’s QB Joe Flacco tonight, preseason Ravens versus Jets, 8pm, ESPS, with Buddy Ryan’s (remember him) son coaching the Jets.
Hey Ray Hale, or anyone else who might know, does anyone have any contact info for Johnny Vincent? I got a notice that he left a message on Classmates for me, but I am not a paying member of that site, so cannot get to the message. If anyone is in touch with John, let him know about this site!
August 25, 2009 at 8:36 am
Ken,
I must also add my appreciation for all your efforts to operate this site. I have enjoyed it and look forward to the future of this site. Thank you very much.
PS; I will send you a soft pretzel for your birthday.
August 25, 2009 at 8:42 am
Ella-Marie,
Phyllis Jennings lived 2 doors away from me on Merriel Ave. I knew her father and younger sister Marie, who married Tommy Edwards from 32nd St. I am still friends with Tommy and Marie. It was a sad ending for Phyllis and later for Duke.
August 25, 2009 at 9:43 am
I have enjoyed re-connecting with former neighbors and hope to continue to hear more stories from 34th St. and Pelham Place neighbors. Thanks for the opportunity to do this.
August 25, 2009 at 9:46 am
Freddy,
Do you know if Duke’s real name was Charles Freehoff – just wondering; if so he was in my class in early elementary years, & would’ve been a ‘70 graduate from whichever high school he would’ve gone to.
August 25, 2009 at 11:10 am
August 25, 2009 at 12:10 pm

August 25, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Freddy,
I thought you retired to your villa in Italy?

August 26, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Joe Dabkowski, welcome to the site; glad you are enjoying it. I seem to recall your name from the High Street area, I hung around 39th a lot with Paul Skeens, and 37th with Billy Coates back in middle school.
August 27, 2009 at 4:35 am
August 27, 2009 at 7:57 am
Dennis Wilson,
Glad to hear from you again. Best of luck in your new career, I always enjoy a good stand up comedian.
August 27, 2009 at 9:12 am
Hey Ken,
I remember you.
August 27, 2009 at 10:34 am
Hey Dennis Wilson! I remember a lot about you! I remember your black and white little dog Tippi. You had chocolate dog treats and you ate one to freak us out. You called and talked to my mom when you were at boot camp. Last time I saw you was in Cramer Hill after your MC days. You had on your dress blues jacket but had adopted more of a hippie look. Good luck with your stand up career!
August 27, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Hey Casey…You live in CA now? Where? I lived in Marina Del Rey area for 7 years. How are your brothers doing? Drop me an email. at shutrtbuglin@cox.net.

Hey Mr. Clark glad you found the site, lot’s of memories for all of us. Did you have any other family members that went to Wilson, I recall playing football for a few years with a Clark any relations to you ?
August 28, 2009 at 9:22 am
No,I’m the only one I know of,sorry!Phil Cohen is visiting me later this morning,
August 28, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Hey Ken,
I have been a “hermit” in my house in Lula, Ga (with no internet) and just found out about your new site design. THANK YOU!
August 28, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Thank you Ken!
This site is like a near death experiance or daja voo, I’ve been there before. My life flashed in front of me….
Inez: I drive through that town of Lula from time to time. Ila is more toward Athens bulldogs side of town. I love the Peach state!
I’m a dam yankee too! Never know when to go home…
August 28, 2009 at 6:53 pm
And it may not be too late for you to enter the “Mrs” East Camden Contest
Speaking of Camden pageants, don’t know if I ever mentioned that I am married to Miss Rays of Sunshine from the 4th of July and other East Camden parades in the 60’s!
August 28, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Jim Clark, Welcome also! Where on the Jersey Shore do you visit?
August 28, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Hey Ken,
I am at Cara’s today.
Greetings to all East Camdenites!
August 29, 2009 at 4:38 am
I usually stay in Waretown,West Creek, Wildwood,or Cape May!!
August 29, 2009 at 6:13 am
Does anyone remember a Joanne Eicfield (sp) who lived in Westfield Acres?I would like to find her if possible?
August 29, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Jim, the Eicfield name sounds familiar. I’m sure someone that visits here will remember the name.
I lived in Tuckerton near West Creek back in the early 80’s, and live close to there now in Smithville.
August 29, 2009 at 2:45 pm
It’s a really small world,I hope someone remembers Joanne Eichfield,I would hang around her place in the Acres listening to Barry US Bonds on the Geeter with the Heaters program, ole Jerry Blavit!
August 29, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Jim, have you checked FaceBook? Lots of people there, and a lot of reconnections have been made there.
August 29, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Yes,and Myspace plus any other locator sites like classmates, etc.I have found some close friends from Cramer Hill,The MacPhersons,Dolores Campbell-Arensberg,Bob and Sonja Dowhy,Rusty Logeren,Maria Clark,George and Cathy Hunt, and Betty Fischer-Mote.
August 31, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Hey Ken,
I just sent you and Peg Marks DeBoard a photo of my husband and I at a convention we attended with Cara (Certified Kitchen Designers) where Bill O’ Rielly was keynote speaker (about 2 years ago).
Hey East Camdenites,
Best Regards
August 31, 2009 at 7:24 pm
August 31, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Hey Pete Its Dyane who lived next door to you at 30th and Royden !!!! Have you been back to visit the old neighborhood?
August 31, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Hi Dyane, I remember you and your family ! Your Dad always had the neatest Mustang car !! I have not been back to that area for many years. I have a friend who is on the Camden Police force that patrols that area now, and he said that the area has not held up well at all.
August 31, 2009 at 9:22 pm
August 31, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Hey Inez, nice photo of you, your husband and “that guy” Bill O’Reilly. Just one question, couldn’t you have posed with Keith Obermann? LOL
August 31, 2009 at 10:25 pm
LOL!

September 3, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Butchie, Welcome to the site! I knew your aunt Rose Cundiff. A number of us who post here were classmates of her’s in middle school. How is she doing? If she is online, be sure to tell her about the site.
And in the Marks family you are thinking of, was there a girl names Linda? I believed she lived near 35th and Federal.
September 3, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Well Ken aunt Rose married Chris Glemser for awhile and now she lives in pine hill,nj she is on my space under either the last name of Cundiff or Glemser,at this time she is by herself with 1 daughter. Yes I believe you are right about Linda marks. Look for Rose on myspace you will find her there.
September 3, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Hey Butchie were you near the Silvia family at all? I know you are a little closer to the tracks as you said, on the other side of federal was the Bates family any of them you know or in sontact with?
September 5, 2009 at 7:14 am
Butch I see Chris Glemser from time to time cause he hangs around with Bobby Haines from 32nd st and recently seen him at Billy and Jeannies funerals.
September 5, 2009 at 10:39 am
Butchie, thanks for the info about your aunt Rose Cundiff, I did connect with her on MySpace and sent her a link to this site. It’s nice hearing from her after so many years.
September 5, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Lenny Formanek do you have a sister named Colette if so I graduated St. Joseph Pro-Cathedal with her in 1966. Tell her Jeanette said hello. I lived 2 doors from Ken at 226 North 32nd St.

September 6, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Hello Ella-Marie and Ken hope you are all enjoying your labor day weekend!
September 7, 2009 at 10:03 pm
September 7, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Inez, & also Dennis,
Do you happen to know if the house by the RR tracks you painted, burned down in the late 50s or early 60s? A friend of mine, & I, were exploring a burned out house by the tracks, & found 2 kittens which we took home, & the one I kept (a tabby, the other was a black cat) was the first of many our family had over the years. Just curious if it’s the same house…
dcmjp@aol.com
September 7, 2009 at 11:17 pm
BTW, Inez, the house that burned also faced Westfield Ave., I believe.
September 9, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Hey Dave,
I don’t remember the house burning down. We left the Acres in the late spring of 1958. We were living on Haddon Avenue when Cara was born in July of that year.
It would really be a coincidence if we are all talking about the same house, Huh?
The house I painted had a porch on the front with a railing running around it.
September 9, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Hey East Camdenites,
Dave Baker is now on face book….. Debra called me and told me last night. So come on all you slackers… get with the program! HaHa.
September 9, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Inez,
I don’t remember a front porch, but there may have been one…it’s been around 50 years…that would be a coincidence…wonder if Dennis had a couple of kittens around that time…?
September 13, 2009 at 8:29 am
Well Pennsauken lucked out again with that Nor’easter .
90% of the heavy rain went first south & west of us ,then when it wrapped around it went mostly north & west of us.
The shore & delaware got clobbered. How did you make out Ken?
They say Philly picked up about 3.5″,but no water in my basement, although my sump pump is running.
September 13, 2009 at 10:58 am
September 13, 2009 at 11:07 am
Todd, welcome to the site, and thanks for your post. You lived on Eutaw through the 70’s when many of us here were in high school at Wilson. I think by 1980, most of us had moved out also. My parents left the end of 1981 from 32nd Street, as the neighborhood was taking a turn for the worse then. They decided it was time to go when most of the neighbors they had known for years, were long moved, and they were robbed by a new neighbor who had moved in next door.
September 13, 2009 at 11:17 am
Skeeter, we got clobbered pretty good here at the Shore… heavy rain, severe winds, and the power was out for about five hours on Friday morning. Many trees down in the area. I’m still cleaning up yard debris. There is a large limb that broke in a tree over my driveway, it’s wedged between two other branches, but I need to get up there and cut the limb down. Waiting for the ground to dry out a little, so my ladder has a good footing…LOL
September 13, 2009 at 11:32 am
Also Todd Edwards, are you related to any of the Edwards family that were from the area of Rogers Avenue and Rt. 130 in Pennsauken in the 60’s and 70’s? They are cousins of mine.
September 13, 2009 at 11:48 am
September 13, 2009 at 12:03 pm
No Ken, I have been researching my family tree and didn’t know much past my father until recently. My father was the product of a WW2 fling with my grandmother around the Naval base in Philly. So he was getting shipped out. He came from the Edwards familly in Frostburg, Maryland. He was the youngest of 13 with his father and grandfathers being coal miners. Actually it was my great-great grandfather who came from Wales in the late 1860s or 70s and married an Irish girl who just came over with her parents. Also coming for the coal mines. Maybe more info than u needed or wanted but wanted to share.
September 13, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I was 7 years old when this happened in 1949.
.My Grandpop used to take me to the barber shop with the “hobby horse”. Kids sat on it while getting a hair cut.
I remember my Nana calling me in the house from the yard, locking the doors & saying a crazy man was walking the streets.
It was in the Cramer Hill section of E. Camden at & around 32nd & River Road.
Check it out at Phil Cohen’s Camden History Site. The link is in the right hand border on this page .
Just type HOWARD UNRUH in the search block when you get there.
Lots of info there.

September 13, 2009 at 9:17 pm
September 13, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Also I am looking for a friend. His name was Andrew Johnson and came from a large African American family of 14 or 15. He was my age (born in 1966) but had quite a few older brothers and sisters. They lived in the area where most folks here say they lived. Sorry I can’t remember the street. His mother would take care of my brothers and I sometimes. I heard his father was killed in some sort of vehicle accident where he was decapitated. Hoping some of this info rings a bell. He was a wonderful friend and his family was very good to ours. Thanks
September 14, 2009 at 8:52 am

Talk about the good ole days.

Phillies looking good w/the exception of the closer, Lidge almost blew the 5-2 lead in the 9th against the n.y. mutts….Manuel may have to consider bringing back the ‘Wild Thing’ Mitch Williams if no one wants to bring their A game into the 9th. see ya

Hey Ken,
Thanks a bunch for creating this site! DGW
September 15, 2009 at 1:45 am
Ken, I really appreciate your comments along with all the sharing here. I knew I was a car guy from the age of 5 when I saw my first Mustang. My kindergarden teacher at Cramer had one and I loved it. And again I remember looking at you “cool” high school kids with the cool cars with Craiger wheels and that 60s rake. Thanks Ken
September 15, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Ken,
A hearty thank you for all your efforts in creating and managing this site.
It’s clear that your efforts have brought joy to many former East Camden residents.
All the best,
Fred

September 17, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Hey Bake, good to hear from you, the Yanks as a hockey team now thats too funny. We will keep it real as the play-offs approach. Dipping into the rest of your comments, I also remember the Front Street Drag Races there was just something in the air those summer nights on Saturday watching races eating Philly pretzels and dodging the cops, oh to be young again, LOL.
September 17, 2009 at 1:40 pm
September 18, 2009 at 3:46 pm

September 19, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Hi Jackie,
Welcome to the site cuz! I know Charlie Moy will be getting in touch as he and Wayne Marks were childhood buddies. I didn’t realize you attended so many of the Camden schools. You could probably start your own site!
Cousin Peg

Skeeter,
Yes, I’m Bruces sister, and that was our apartment when we were first married.
Jackie
September 21, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Skeeter,
Please don’t remove the picture.
Many thanks, Peg
September 23, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Hello everyone. Just stopped in since it has been quite a while.
Lenny Formanek, well that’s a name I haven’t heard in forever. Glad to see you found the site. Pete Dicanni too.
Ken, loved what you have done to the site. So much easier.
Go East Camden!
September 26, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Hey Ken,
I just got onto the site and Cara is bugging me to come into the dining room to play an (after dinner) game with grandson Christian, husband Bob, and of course Cara. So…. I’ll be back later. This had better be a “good” game! HaHa.
September 26, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Hey Ken,
Well, I’m back from playing “Clue” with the family.
September 27, 2009 at 4:05 pm

September 29, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Hey Al – It’s your old neighbor Pete from Cambridge Circle from Maple Shade. See my post from 8/29. Glad to see you on Ken’s web site. Hope you and the family are doing well.
September 29, 2009 at 2:44 pm
I meant my post from 8/31. Sorry Al.
September 30, 2009 at 8:38 am
September 30, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Unbelievable how time flies Al !!! I cannot believe your kids are that old !! I think that when you lived in the Shade, it was only Alex that was there. I think you were there in the late 80’s early 90’s correct ? There have been two owners of that house since you left, one that was there from 1992-2000 and the current owners. Chris and I are doing well, the neighborhood has not changed much, most of the same folks are still living on the block. Funny how we met back up through Ken’s web site. Always enjoyed your Xmas cards showing how big the kids were getting.
October 2, 2009 at 11:36 am
Hey Skeeter,
I have a challenge for you…remember the heading “Current Events in East Camden” that Ken had on the site? You have e-mailed me interesting news items from the Courier Post and I would like to see some of those posted on this site for those of us who are no longer in the ares but would enjoy the goings on in East Camden. I especially liked the 60 year update on Unruh.
I really enjoy this site and check a couple times a day and am disappointed when there are no new postings. Some news items might spur people’s memories and get the chatter going again. What do you think?
Peg
October 3, 2009 at 9:55 am
October 3, 2009 at 10:10 am
Pete DiCianni, Have you checked out FaceBook yet? Most of the Class of 72 from Davis, and the Class of 76 from Wilson, are there, as well as other years. You’ll also find an amazing number of former Camden people who may have moved and left Wilson or Davis before graduating. Come check it out, everyone is there.
October 3, 2009 at 11:07 pm
I reached out to Harold Melleby via his work email address at Eastern Regional School District. If he is on facebook it is under an “assumed” name….lol It would be nice to hear from him.
October 4, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Hey Ken Barr,
Come on and join Ken’s East Camden FaceBook group!
I “know” that you have a lot of “good stuff” to share with us.
You have inspired me to get back into my “Art”….. I sketched a portrait of you with your “plant” on the school window sill; but tried to highlight your face and used the wrong color and spoiled it. When I complete my next attempt, I will mail it to you. (Each day I think about completing it; but am cautious that I might mess this one up too…. by being too anxious… as before.) We artists are quite “eccentric”, you know. HaHa
October 5, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Hey Ken Barr,
I just read your post of Sept. 17.
If you had to “dodge the cops”, it must have been for something that Bake did. HaHa
Uh Oh, I’m in trouble with Bake, now! HaHa
October 6, 2009 at 11:26 pm
October 7, 2009 at 2:52 am
Hey Ken Barr,
Yeah, your right….. Bake “is” a pretty nice guy! He calls me a “Southern Belle” Y’all. “Why, I do declare, he certainly knows how to charm a lady, sir”. Ha Ha.
October 7, 2009 at 10:02 am
Hey Ms. Inez are you back to having a computer full time or did I catch you at a time you happened to be strolling by?
October 7, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Ken B….. sorry to hear about your computer woes, when I used to use a desktop loaded with windows me/aol it would crash on a monthly basis, considered tossing it down the hill of my backyard out of frustration lol. yea, tbs locked up the initial playoff series, Moyer has groin and stomach muscle injuries, so he’s out. from what i’m hearing, Utley seems to have some nagging injuries, but the team will have to suck it up like all the others since it’s playoff time……not sure if Barry Manilow tunes are what the Phils will need to get by this year, maybe ‘EYE OF THE TIGER’ is what they need to survive, especially in the closer dept…..game time start of 2:37, with swirling 40 mph winds, should be plenty of long drives, let the playoffs begin and go PHILS!
October 7, 2009 at 5:17 pm
October 8, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I am sad by that news, thanks Skeeter for posting that, we will be in prayer for his family, he was a stand out as he served the community.
October 9, 2009 at 1:14 pm
rough loss last night, Hamel’s mind wasn’t in the game as his wife went into labor w/1st born….out to Colorado sat. to face 34 degree weather with a 70% chance of snow……remember the game last year with the cold rain against tampa? should be interesting….hopefully Happ will start pending how serious the injury to his leg is. even though the Phils will be in Colorado, they seem to play better ball away, may that trend continue!
October 9, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Thanks Skeeter,
Mr Melleby will forever be a part of my growing up in East Camden, He treated every one of us kids in the neighborhood as one of his own, Always there with praise and encouragement, At the same time he’d balance that with a stern scolding if you deserved it, Not as the Chief but as a father figure, I always had the deepest respect for him, My heart goes out to the Melleby family, He was one of those people that truly have an effect on your life, Rest high on that mountain, God bless.
October 9, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I will always remember the picture of him standing in his front yard that made the front page of the Courier Post. What a joke that paper always was. I’m going to try and make the viewing on Sun night, anyone else?
October 9, 2009 at 7:31 pm

October 11, 2009 at 7:30 am
Hey Skeeter,
Thank You for letting us know about Police Chief Melleby. I will let Cara and Debra know. I never met Chief Melleby; but I know he was a fine person.
God Bless the Melleby family in their time of sorrow.
October 11, 2009 at 7:49 am
Hey Guys,
I’m using Cara’s computer again.

October 12, 2009 at 2:25 am
October 12, 2009 at 8:48 am
Go Phils, I hate to report I stayed a little longer and saw it to 5-4 Phils then out came the chain saws for sure, Harry your a better man than I ever thought I could be, true die hard fan til the end thanks for burning the torch on our behalf and WTG Phils. OMG can you believe what it will be like if we do revisit that 50 match up, I am not sure this web site could contain the blogging, LOL.

Skeeter,
Thanks for the info on Chief Melleby.

October 13, 2009 at 10:48 am

October 13, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Dave Martin,
I hope you can get Harzie to post, Or even allow us to get in touch with him and the rest of the family, Ted, Diane, Patty, and Linda. It would be nice to reminisce with them again, They were all a part of growing up on Pelham Place, One of the greatest streets in East Camden!
(I can say that without bias, My front door was on 34th St. LOL)

October 16, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Terry, yes I remember and it was Mr. Cohens class.last time I saw Lydia was many years ago, think it was at DR. Jekyll’s. I live in Va. are you still in that area? Lydia webb was her name. How have you been all these years?
October 16, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Terry, If you look at the class pictures of Davis school you will see our fourth grade class. I think its around 72-74.
October 16, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Terry, actually was known as Theodore also as by that is actually my real name.
October 19, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Thank you.
October 19, 2009 at 3:26 pm
October 19, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Janis,
I remember your sister Claire, from early days at Davis. She was in my class at least a couple of years…say hi, but she probably wouldn’t remember me.

I was just going to post about Unruh. Thanks for keeping the site posted!
October 20, 2009 at 8:20 am
Unruh’s last victim died this summer Mr Cohen I believe,I still have the original magazine that focused on the incident. This is a great site Ken
October 20, 2009 at 10:11 am
Skeeter,
I printed the Courier Post article to show to a friend whose parents were close friends of the Cohens.

Skeeter
October 23, 2009 at 9:30 am
October 23, 2009 at 9:41 am
Ken,
Thanks for the info about facebook.

Bake, GO YANKEE’S If last nights game is any indication of the intensity the Yank’s are bringing to the World Series, this will be the Series of all series to watch. Buckle up butter cups this is gonna be a great one. Phil’s in 6.
October 26, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Sorry, Bake, but Go Phillies!!!
October 26, 2009 at 6:25 pm
I found an old friend on facebook yesterday. We attended H.H. Davis in the 50’s just after I moved from Rosedale Ave to 29th & Westfield. He lived on Westfield too around 30th or 31st,I believe.
His name is Joseph C. Saii…pronounced SAY-EYE.
If you knew Joe,you can find him listed on the class of 1960 WWHS.
October 26, 2009 at 7:21 pm
October 27, 2009 at 8:25 am
Bake,
I have been a Yankee fan since the 1950’s and the Phillies my #2 team. This year the Phillies have been the best Philly team of my time and to be honest I had a difficult decision to make. Needless to say I am staying with my Yankees. If the Yankees should loose, and I do not think they will, I will not feel as bad as normal. This should be a series to remember.
October 27, 2009 at 8:26 am
Now Bake you know we love you bro and we can’t let a litle sportsmanship cause you to lose your outlook on life LOL. There will be no taunting, or smack talking or street slinging chatter not even a sorry about your luck……… NOT !!! Phil’s in 6
October 27, 2009 at 8:28 am
Couldn’t agree with you more Freddy, this is going to be the series of all series, I for one am looking forward to some great baseball, regardless of the outcome…. well Phil’s in 6
October 27, 2009 at 8:52 am
Yankees in 7!
October 27, 2009 at 1:07 pm
October 27, 2009 at 6:55 pm
LOL
October 27, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Bake,
The first two games are at Yankee Stadium, your comment above infers they are at Philly.
October 27, 2009 at 9:12 pm
I stand corrected, Brett Meyers will be on the Phil’s W.S. lineup, (M. Cairo, an ex-Yankee, off the roster), as reported by ESPN. Bake, time for the ex-factor A-Rod to get back to his post-season slump….lol
October 27, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Freddy, You’re right, I must of sat in the back in Geography too! LOL
I’d be amazed if Philly could take four from the Yanks.
Harry, Talk about being in a pitchers head, Martinez has a long history with the Yankees, If ever there was a time for him to implode…
Talk about an X-factor!
LOL
October 27, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Yeah, Bake, my Uncle Ron used to take me to Phillies games at Connie Mack stadium – too long ago to remember many details, but I loved to go…still think a Phillies repeat would be sweet…we’ll see! LOL
October 28, 2009 at 9:09 pm
Hey Y,all,
I’ll bet you $100.00 that either the Phillies or the Yankies win the World Series! HaHa
This is just an old lady being silly…
October 28, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Your Ok with me Ms Inez sorry I dont bet LOL, sucker born everyday, By the Way Bake can Chase Utley be silenced NOPE 2-0 IN THE 6TH
October 28, 2009 at 11:43 pm
October 29, 2009 at 2:32 am
Ken Barr, ditto to all of the above, Lee also set a record with a .052 era w/30 or more innings pitched in post season, surpassing Rivera….with this masterpiece….watching the corporate Yankee ticket holders file out of the park when the Phillies went up 4-0 was priceless!
October 29, 2009 at 9:40 am
Lets see, what do they call us? The Frillies?
OK FRILLIES 1…..YANKEES 0
\
Lee & Utley Great Job.
October 29, 2009 at 9:49 am
Harry, you saw that also, I said to Glenda I don’t think their going to the bathroom together,LOL and the empty seats with every camera shot from 1st base line, what did they think no one would notice,LOL. You are right Skeeter hats off to the 2 of them
October 29, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Many thought Philly wouldn’t get a win at Yankee Stadium…Lee & Utley were awesome last night – keep it going, Phillies!!! A repeat would be sweet!
October 29, 2009 at 11:52 pm
October 30, 2009 at 1:25 am
offense definitely not there tonight, and add the fact that the ump was giving Burnette 2 to 5 inches outside of homeplate…..Werth faling asleep off 1st base and Utley hitting into a double play with Howard on deck didn’t help much either…..looks like they aren’t afraid of Rivera though, which is a good sign….better luck Sat. later
October 30, 2009 at 8:57 am

Skeeter,
Enjoyed the Courier Post pictures. Thanks for posting.
October 31, 2009 at 5:36 am
I think you are right Skeeter they need to lay off the long ball and work on the offensive fundamentals. As for the 2nd game loss stats not sure, but if it’s followed by 3 win’s, I’ll take it.
November 1, 2009 at 12:52 am
I could list a bunch of things but they would most likely come off as excuses, so I don’t think I will offer much about tonights game, only to say A-Rod mounting a come back and the Phil’s sticks not there and Phil’s are making a habit of leaving starting pitchers in a little longer then maybe they should. But NO Excuses,LOL the Yankees won the ballgame tonight and it’s time for the Phil’s to keep their heads up and in the game, lots more series to be played.
November 2, 2009 at 8:54 am
I guess I will be the outcast for this topic but the Yankees played good ball last night. What I do not like is not executing 100% evertime such as Posada getting thrown out at 2nd in the ninth and Cabrera at 1st on a routine grounder. Both players were trotting. One more win and the 27th title goes to the Yankees. I think the biggest disappointment for the Phils is their quiet bats.

November 2, 2009 at 10:30 am
November 2, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Skeeter, thanks for the link to the page about Marlton Pike. That is what this site is all about – Camden Memories!
November 2, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Ken,
You did the same thing I did…called it Marlton Pike. I never remember it being Marlton Avenue, always Marlton Pike. ‘Course I had Remington Avenue/Place wrong for many years, too!
November 2, 2009 at 5:45 pm
November 2, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Peggy, I never heard it called Marlton Avenue either, it was always Marlton Pike during the 60’s and 70’s, even buses that ran down the street had “Marlton Pike” on their route signs.
November 3, 2009 at 1:01 am
